how do you know if you are getting enough protein? i think most people get enough through regular food. however i'm a vegetarian and i've been putting in more miles than normal lately and i have stomach issues so i was wondering what the signs of not enough protein are?

I was a ovo-lacto veggie my big years of racing (350 mile weeks were the norm April into September. I made no special effort to get protein and was in fact more concerned with not eating to much and diverting blood flow from muscle recovery to digestion. I had read that my body weight required a rather small amount of protein (40 -50 grams/day for 150 pounds?). Since I was eating most of 4000 calories a day and nearly all of that was from whole foods, I figured I was meeting that requirement easily, even if the proteins I was eating were quite incomplete. And given my health and performance, it was obvious my diet was not slowing me down.

So I'd say: if you are putting in big miles, eating whole/healthy foods and maintaining weight, don't sweat it.

I'm not sure how I missed this back in June. My wife is a veggie so by default, so am I (at home). I drink a scoop of Pea Protein Isolate (non GMO) after dinner every evening.

"How do you know?" I was feeling tired and not recovering well (tender muscles) after hard rides or gym work. The extra 30 g. of protein each day helped.

79, 50 g. seems OK for a low activity person, but low for an active person.

the continuing saga...the doctor said i couldn't be a vegetarian anymore. i've ended up with (had?) some food allergies, mainly anything dairy along with eggs and beef and various beans. i was loading up my veggies with a lot of cheese; eggs were a big part of my diet. anyway my stomach never felt any better so they ran allergy tests and now i'm eating meat so i'm probably getting enough protein. i guess i've always had these food allergies but they have gotten worse over the years. i wonder if it's due to all the antibiotics from the lyme's disease? the bright side is now i'm trying to get some weight back on by loading up on bacon and bbq pork.
