....when I was just bike racing. 19 hours of training last week. 19!!! Included in that was 260 miles of riding, a bunch if water-running (injured calf), a bit of actual running (run / walk protocol) and just under 10K yds of swimming. If I put in 19 hours / week on just the bike, I would have put in ~380 miles. Hell, the 260 miles I did do would have been a massive week for me back when I was bike racing. This IM training is just ridiculous....I don't know how people do it every year (or multiple times per year).

I've said that a lot to myself recently because I also have a much higher mileage volume than when I was racing and every year in June when the local mountainous stage races roll around ask myself what if I were to pin a number on...? Maybe next year.

Which IM race are you targeting?

IMWI in Madison. But I have the IM 70.3 Racine in 3 weeks. Was hoping for a decent result in Racine, but 3 weeks with no running should put paid to that idea.

Madison is September 7. In between I will probably race the USAT Nationals since I qualified a few weeks ago at Leon's Triathlon. I'm gonna get completely crushed, but it should be a fun experience.

I am now 5 weeks out from Madison. I took the week off from work and put in one last HUGE week of training in terms of volume. Finished out at 27.5 hours of training for the week (!).

Totals were:

Swimming - 12K meters
Riding - 336 miles
Running - 45.3 miles

Let me tell you, I don't envy the life of a professional cyclist or triathlete at this point. I'm wiped out....had to do 5 hours on the bike today and had I not been riding with 2 other guys, I don't know that I could have done it (both mentally and physically).

This week will drop back to my normal volume and up the intensity. Then I am racing USAT Nationals next weekend and have a rest week. Follow that up with a two week taper and then it is race week.

Hopefully I timed this big block of volume well. I would have preferred to do it next week, but racing Nationals on tired legs would be kinda dumb (not that I have any serious aspirations for the race anyway).

Except that a pro does not have another job, gets a massage every day and is already a genetic freak. 20 to 30,000 km, 12 to 18,000 miles is a lot of bike riding.

Meh....define "worth it".

I think it will be. Family has been ultra-supportive of the move (Mrs. CK has been the one encouraging me to do an IM for years). So in that regard, I haven't really "sacrificed" much. Still hit all the kids activities, etc.

The big thing for me will be (hopefully) getting over this particular hill. If you'll recall, this all started with me doing a tri w/ a buddy back in 2009 as a bit of a diversion. That led to the first Achilles injury, which led to the DVT and PE. After 5 years of struggling with assorted running injuries and looking at death square in the eye (no hyperbole, either).....yeah, I think it will have been worth it. If nothing else as a "Fook you" to my running injuries and showing my kids that you can overcome anything if you put the effort in.

But I still have a long way to go....5 weeks until race day and a running injury could be lurking around every corner.

Oh, and I still have to finish the damn thing.....

Training this week is gonna take a hit though...buddy's mom passed away yesterday and I need to fly out for services / funeral tomorrow and Wednesday. But I'll pack my runing shoes and deal with it as best as I can.
