Interesting my first road bike had a sella italia seat. I kinda liked it. But that first year of road riding when I was 16-17 it was quite painful taking a leak. I always figured it was adjustment problems being unaccustomed to long days on a bike (we went straight into doing centuries from zero) It went away as time went on and never had any seat issues since.

Re the need for a dedicated TT bike, all I did was buy a cheap set of clip ons and sprung for some latex tubes. My thought process was while I’d like to be top of the leaderboard that wasn’t a remote possibility. My objective was to measure this weeks effort vs the one from two weeks ago. I wasn’t willing to drop eight large to buy two minutes on a 20k course. A hundred bucks for 45 seconds? Yeah, I’ll do that.

But Dale, if you shelled out another 10 you could get wind tunnel time and another 15 seconds.

Seriously - I like your approach.  We need a new internet abbreviation: DTE.  Down to Earth.  Right up there with KISS.

My main goal as I age is to keep on aging, bicycle or no bicycle.

The title of this thread should be "Goals setting as we age"; the goals setting like the sun. And seriously, the secret of happiness is to be OK with that. (Though I will still do what I can on the bike to slow that setting.)

How do you manage to still push yourself to new levels when those levels are just no longer achievable?

I dunno...I have hit my best fitness levels over the last couple of years and I'm creeping up on 55. A lot of that is through better, smarter (and more) training. Back when I was in my 20's and 30's, I thohght a 150 mile week was a lot....now I do that as a rest week.

Getting into tri's after my clots gave me new motivations and goals...ones that also weren't comparable to previous marks, so I had a black sheet of paper to work from.

What about gravel races? You can largely compete against yourself if you want...set time goals that are challenging and see if you can hit them. Outside of the first hour or so, they are largely indvidual efforts 9ar at best, small groups of 5-10 people).

Speaking of time trials. CK, you interested in a TT stage race?

https://tourthetrace.com

Small turnout but COVID made it tough to get participants. Kent Bostick was registered but didn't start.
Couple of guys from here went and said it was a blast but 444 miles of TT in 4 days was tough.

I'm considering it for next year.

I don't see what is so hard about that...each stage is basically downhill, as the elevation drop is ore than the gain.

That actually looks pretty cool and would be something that would suit me well. Depending on COVID, I could be interested.

That reminds me of some goofball newbie acquaintance in my home town that said he was going to do a Katy Trail ride. He figured he's kill it, "All I gotta do is get in 40 miles or so and then it's downhill 200 miles!" Um... ok... downhill at a 0.25% grade and you're on gravel.

I was going to suggest a KOM attempt on Cottonwood west side gravel climb seeing that 6ix is in CO (I think) but holy hell they paved it in 2019. Looking at locations where I took beauty gravel pics back in 2013 and its all fresh asphalt now -sacrilege. Its become the highest paved pass in north america apparently.

I'm 68 now. I won't be in my prime again until I'm 71.
My real current goal is to ride with my grandchildren. The grandson turns 5 on Wednesday, and the granddaughter was 1 in September. Give them 10 years, and maybe we can do an MS ride in honor of their Nonna. By then, my goal could be to keep up with them.

"insta tandems" that clamp onto your seatpost are a great way to ride with younger children.

"How do you manage to still push yourself to new levels when those levels are just no longer achievable?" I'm not sure what you said is true. I ride with a guy who is in his mid-60s and is a multiple-time national champion and in the Maine Running Hall of Fame. I haven't raced with him but on training rides, he is a beast and routinely crushes people half his age. Here is his Strava profile: https://www.strava.com/athletes/2979982 I think Hank's secret is he simply has never stopped moving. From running, biking and skiing he is active year-round. I feel as good now at 48 as I did in my twenties because I am also active year-round. I'm definitely not as fast but I still love to ride. I simply tweaked and refined some of the crazy $4it I used to do when I started out. As long as you are having fun, it's a win.
