Looking at the new Zwift Hub trainer -- the reviews are really good as is the price in comparison to other trainers out there. Is it time for me to sell off my dependable Kurt Kinetic trainers and move into the current century? I ride a trainer regularly throughout the year for consistency in my workouts, as well as riding outside for my longer rides, but fear the new electronic gizmos that all the cool kids are riding won't have the staying power of my current investments. I know you know, that I'm one of those guys yelling at youngsters to get the hell off my lawn ; ) P.S. I felt the need to start a thread, give this forum a little CPR.

It took me a while to move on from my LeMond Revolution direct-drive trainer. I reluctantly caved and got a Kickr in 2017. My initial time using it with Zwift BLEW MY MIND. Not the Zwift graphics or anything (this was still somewhat early,) but the way it changed the resistance based on road gradient was absolutely incredible. At the time, the LeMond was the closest thing to actually riding outside due to the flywheel and wind-up, but the Kickr was just sooooo much better. Combined with being able to virtually ride and explore courses, challenge yourself on segments among other things, it flipped riding indoors upside-down. It was now not only tolerable but a viable alternative to spending 20 minutes putting on cold weather clothes or having to deal with inclimate weather, not to mention shorter days. I could get in an amazing work-out regardless of time of day and it was an efficient use of time.

I'd never go back to just popping in a Stone Temple Pilots CD and hammering away for an hour while watching replays of the 1995 Tour de France (thanks World Cycling Productions!)

Yeah, I do podcasts and music. I'm okay with it, but the wife might be into a new trainer to share, and at the price of the Zwift Hub it looks doable.

Huck, I was the same way. Perfectly content with listening to music and watching old race videos. Did it for over 20 years on various mag trainers, fluid and some rollers.

But WOW, did the move to electronic ever make a difference! I'd go so far as to say it's wholly not the same experience at all.

You won't be disappointed. Plus, you can control the resistance with a simple phone app should you just want to zone out and pedal away listening to podcasts. Always an option. Another positive is that the direct-drive systems are fairly quite and don't eat tires.

The Zwift Hub is sold out and may not be available for quite awhile now....the hot deal on a trainer is the H3 from Saris, which you can get for ~$400 with a discount code. Use CSDEALDJ-50 at checkout.

I bought one about 2 months ago after ~3 years on Elite trainers (Direto and Direto X, which I got as a warranty replacement for my original Direto). It is a far superior trainer....quiet, smooth and the transitions in ERG mode are great. Widely recognized as the best trainer for ERG.

So you can get a $1K trainer now for $400 or get a $500 trainer for $500 at some unknown point in the future. 😝

Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

FWIW, I have a multitude of entertainment options for when I am riding....if I am doing a TrainerRoad workout up to about Sweet Spot intensity, I watch TV shows / movies off my Apple TV. I will often run Zwift concurrently with the workout for more visual distraction.

If I am doing group rides on Zwift or higher intensity stuff on TR, then I switch to music...did a long group ride on Sat (100 miles, 3' 50" ride time) amd I was perfectly engaged the whole time.

Thanks guys!

I like the Saris. Great reviews. And that price.

CK - What retailer is that deal through, or is it through the Saris website?

Direct through the Saris website....they went through a modified bankruptcy and are dumping their excess inventory.

I have been very, very happy with my H3 since I got it....can't go wrong with this deal.

Note - don't try and bundle it with anything, as the code won't work then.

+1 on the e-trainers. Boredom prevented me from riding longer than 45 minutes on rollers or a dumb trainer. Like CK said you can get really engaged and time flys by.

I'm putting fenders on my bike and the 38 mm tires. Just say no to trainers, training regimes or whatever.

(now get off my sunburned lawn)

I may have to enter 21st century as well with a garmin purchase.

Did a longish gravel ride with a million turns in France and the turn by turn support was awesome.

Cure for lawn sunburn - the rain we're getting now.  Enough that the blades that make it will be the ones with snorkels.  (All the sound effects last night of a classic Pacific storm.  Wind, rain and the percussion of falling objects in an ever-changing symphony.)

And to go bike related - takes me back to one of my first.  January 1980 in Santa Cruz.  The crazy years.  The years the Mooney was built to get me through.  Bike was brand new.  I'd seen somewhere that Alba Road had a 4 mile grade that was basically a 1/2 Mt Washington except paved.  So I rode down it.  Did I say wet?  There were inch deep rivers running across the road. After that descent, I was totally sold on Mafac cantis!  Brakes on the whole time (let go and you don't make the next corner) and I one fingered the first half.  Had to go to two as a concession to the cold and extreme wet.
