tried and trying. It is hard - keep HR low on hills, and high on flats / downhills. tricky...
the tried is leaving the bike aside and doing things like running and hiking.

Been doing it for some time with quite good results.

Can't do it on my Mtb. When climbing as slow as I can my HR is about 10 bpm over my number (130). But when able I like riding at that number an effort you can ride at for a long time. It's going to be my approach for an upcoming Mtb marathon race, keep the HR low so I can finish stronger. You can't ride a 50 mile race like you would a 16 mile race.

Did it exclusively for 2 months with good results while doing base miles. continue with 2-3 rides per week at Maffetone pace and other 2-3 rides are either intervals or Saturday/Sunday group hammerfests.

I am having one of my best years ever, breaking my personal records left and right. The training has also been the easiest I have ever done too. Don't knock it until you have tried it (3 + months). Base mileage is not just for Dec/Jan/Feb.
