+1 Spud on the cleats. Although lately it's been my joints/old bones that creak.

start from the inside and work your way out, BB and cranks, check your chain ring bolts, then remove, clean and re-grease the threads on your pedals, then check your shoes and cleats.
But as stated before, I have had a creak, and it was some spokes on the rear wheel one time, and skewers on another
