Made that mistake one time… you absolutely cannot either inflate a tire or tee off on a charging dog with one of those worthless pieces of junk.
I'm still waiting to use a cartridge on a mad dog ala the scuba tank scene in the movie Jaws  |

I've witnessed a guy "use" two cartridges and not get one bit of air in his tire. I had to rescue him with my mini-pump. OK, he was a newbie; he didn't know how to properly dismount and mount the tire either, or how to get wheel back in his frame :-)
That minimum maintenance sign is awesome. Reminds me of the powerline trail on Kauai

My limit is two digits. Pump strokes that is. More than 100 stokes is too many! Zephals (HP and HPX) get me to any pressure I actually want to ride with little over 90 strokes. And I have had enough epic rides to know there are days when two inflations doesn't cut it. Do I carry three cartridges? Four?
Dale, I heard a line about hunting grizzlies with small caliper rifles last night that applies here. Advice from seasoned Alaskan woodsmen? Saw the front sight off the barrel. Doesn't hurt as much when the bear rams it up your a$$.

Okay, having just got a new bike with swoopy top tube and no easy place to carry a Zefal HP (which I have used for 20 years on my previous bikes) , I went through this mini-pump foolishness. I finally ended up with a Lezyne that was the biggest cage mount pump I could find, but I look at it very skeptically. I used it at home, and it will pump up the tires to 80 psi in less than 100 strokes, so it is not one of the foolish ones that are not much larger than a ballpoint pen. Still, is there an easy way to mount a Zefal on a top tube that is not straight, with seat and head tube junctions that are not linear?
Also, I secured my pump on my old bike with two velcro straps, so there is no way I am getting it off quickly to fend off a dog, unless it is a very slow dog.

I have two frame pumps (commuter, winter bike) and one mini pump (summer steed); while the mini pump is a bit more awkward to use it is also most effective at getting pressure in my tires.
I won't go cartridge cause they are single use disposable (can they be recycled?); nothing wrong with using a little musle; that's why I ride a bike to begin with. |

I have a Specialized mini-pump that I use for travel.....got sock of packing a floor pump into my bike case.
While it is a bit tedious, I have no problem achieving a high enough pressure for me to ride on. Just takes a few extra (dozen) strokes!! |

I bought a case of 24 16g threaded co2 cartridges at Amazon.com for around $16.00. I pack a mini, but for backup only. My carbon bike won't accommodate a full length frame pump, I pack one on my old steel bike. Only once in the past 15 years did I get stuck with no air. Had 4 flats on one ride, due to cra* tubes.
I packed a Lezyne Road Drive Large for one season. A lot of pumping and screwing going on. I counted 150 strokes to get up to 100 psi.

Keith, bikes are an elegant solution. The elegant solution that makes the bikes we know possible is pneumatic tires. Flats happen. Frame fit pumps are an elegant solution. Designing a bike that doesn't accommodate frame fit pumps to sell to riders who do not have support vehicles isn't.
True engineers love elegant solutions. |

I've got Armadillos on my tandem… closet thing to run-flat tires the bike business has ever produced. I'd _never_ run those horrid things on anything other than a tandem. Worst riding tire of all time-- there is a reason they are almost flat proof |
