This summer I have the opportunity to commute to/from work about half the time.  It's about ten miles each way, so I do get sweaty.  No problem, we have showers, but I was wondering about my bib shorts.  They will dry out, but I have always lived to the mantra, "Never wear the same shorts twice" (without washing them between rides).  Although it's the same day, I am a bit leery.  How do other commuters handle it?  Antibacterial chamois cream before the second ride?  Do nothing and don't worry about it?  Just curious...

Do nothing...and I use mine more than just twice a day. All that washing leads to faster wear, needing to buy new stuff more often, a waste of resources in my mind.

Other than the perception aspect, the key to what you can or cannot do in this respect depends on skin sensitivity. Trial and error.

Ditto to OC except I haven't gone to more than a day without washing. Definitely can wear twice in a day no problem, been doing it for years and putting in 40-50miles per day. Right now I use a little bit of bag balm right before a ride and shower right after the ride and this is working just fine.

If my commute was only 10 miles I'd be tempted to just wear shorts and some non-cotton skivvies.

I've always wondered what folks doing a cross-country bike tour or a race like the Great Divide do. Get used to the stink like I do on backpacking trips, I guess. On the few tours I've done, I've had access to a shower and then wash one and wear the other, leaving it to dry in the sun.

I've been using Under Armour "jockey briefs" under my shorts. I think jockey briefs is what they are called. They are a long snug fitting short, several inches shorter than cyciling shorts (and available in at least three different lengths). I wear one pair into work, sower, change into the other pair and at the end of the day, throw riding shorts over and go. In the warm months, I skip them going home. Means I wash my riding shorts considerably less often and they last longer. Washing the Under Armours doesn't appear to hurt them at all. My oldest pair is still going strong after three or four years.

Not as good an anti-chafe as a true chamois. but for 10 mile commutes, they work really well. Two other benefits. One, it gives me a place to sew D-rings to for holding my custom kneewarmers. And two, they do a good job of keeping valuables in place; better than some of my riding shorts. Also, they add no extra padding. (I know I will likely be back in diapers if I live long enough, but please, let me go the middle 80 years diaper free!)

I think as long as your morning shorts completely dry out then you are good. Most bacteria want humid conditions to survive. Fuel for the bacteria increases every ride between washings.

I used to commute 40 miles to work. Had to stop due to a mile long bridge that became too dangerous to cross on the way home. I always rode in with a backpack or had extra gear in my office to change into. The sight of a wet dirty chamois wasn't something people needed to see when they came into my office.

They are always dry enough by the end of the day for the commute home.

I hang my bibs and jersey on an unused coat rack, which happens to sit directly over an air-conditioning vent in the floor. So they have a steady flow of cool air on them during the day. They are completely dry and cool when I put them back on at the end of the day.

Sounds like the overall recommendation is to just wear 'em twice in a day...which is great. We deal with more than enough laundry as it is! Thanks for the input! Very helpful.

Nope, still here at Healthwise. I am just ride-sharing with other parents for kid's camps this summer, so I have a few days that I don't need my truck.

BTW...I rode in the dirt yesterday during my lunch hour. Corrals loop. Fun!

I was hoping that we would get some rain today to knock the dust down...just clouds and a few spits of drops.

AYK, I ride dirt every day! )
