i'm looking for a saddle. i think i know what i'm looking for but i don't know where to find it. so far i've tried specialized riva and romin and the smp plus. the smp wasn't good. i did 50 miles on it yesterday and i should've turned around at 10 miles. i like the riva because it's wide enough (168mm), firm enough and almost flat enough across the back but it doesn't have a cut out. the romin is firm and has the cut out but it's not flat enough and the cut out could be longer. i don't have issues with numbness but i do get stabbing pains in the perineum after a few hours. a friend said he had the same problem and it turned out to be a urinary tract infection. i don't have any symptoms of a uti but it might be worth a look. maybe i need a tt/tri saddle? maybe shorter rides? i try to stand up a lot. i've got a bunch of new shorts and the all feel about the same. i need a saddle that's wide and flat and firm with a long cut out.

If you are having perineum issues, maybe look at an ISM Adamo saddle. They make a road version as well as TT / tri saddles. The key is knowing how to sit on them....you want the "dangling down parts" to be just off the nose of the saddle. You don't sit on the back of the saddle like a normal one.
Never worked for me personally, but lots of people swear by them.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Like has been said numerous times - the SMP's take a break in period for your other posterior regions to adapt to the new pressure, and for me after several weeks I have not looked back - four years now...

i don't think there was any adapting to the saddle. it's not the kind of pain i feel like i can adapt to.

Gads, I have a large box in our garage full of saddles. Most of them work if I tweak them enough. You might consider a San Marco SKN.The saddle is split and each lobe sits independently on it's rail, providing a lot of flex. Of course whether it works for you is another story.

Have you considered a plain old Rolls? I keep trying other saddles and I always have ended up back on the Rolls.

My current favorite is the Terry Fly. It is a cut-out version of the old Sella Italia, a seat I loved until my body said "no more'. It also has a wedge shaped depression and no flare up at the back which means my broken tailbone is spared. I have that seat on my three good bikes. Made by Selle Italia so I suspect they will last a long time. (All three seats are around 7-8000 miles now. Youngsters for that company's seats.) It is a real leather cover, so I use plastic covered Specialized on my winter bikes.
I occasionally have discomfort early in riders, probably from sitting wrong. This has led to wondering if that ride was going to become a nightmare, but those rides have always gone well. Many rides I finish and realize I never thought about the seat at all and everything feels fine. That's my standard for a good seat.
This is a ti railed seat, so if you are a rail breaker or will have to locate the seat at the seatpost clamp extremes so the start of the rail is in the clamp, this won't be a good choice. (That was my thinking when I had my custom seatposts made. Huge setback so the clamps are nearly centered on the rails. That they have the big Thompson clamps, big making for less stress on the rails, further helps my peace of mind.)

Yeah, I was going to mention a Rolls also. That's what I am using now....see if you can find a used steel rail on ebay, the ti Rolls are pretty pricy. Regal is another fav. One prob is the rails are shorter than the new fangled saddle and you might need a seatpost with a lot of setback.
