Too pricey, I'll be getting a new drive train for the MtB this winter and it will be mechanical 1xBIG. http://velonews.competitor.com/2014/09/mtb/reviewed-shimano-xtr-di2_346092

Yeah that's a lot of jake. I can see the benefits for sure especially for racing. If I still raced I might have considered it with a single ring. Less so for the riding I do. I really liked the integrated mountain bike levers and shifters with rapid rise in races. Made it easier the shift more often so I did. However I do not see how a double front will ever not have dropping and chainsuck issues that inevitably occur with use. That is why I did change to Next SL 30 tooth wide narrow and XX1 stuff. I don't use need or miss a tall gear.

What I discoverd using a double front was that I rode in the small ring most of the time because my big rings were 36 and 38 for my two bikes. Too large for rolling terrain I ride. So I rode those set ups in the small ring way too much. Whereas with triples the 44 or 42 rarely got used but the 32 mid ring was used most of the time.

I'm waiting for the XT version. I'll pass on 1X set ups...2X10=great for me for the riding I do.

I'm going to go try this. 1x11 no XTR shifter, but use a climbing road shifter, the double button job, that mounts 5 inches from your other shifter. Use that, junction box, batt, junction box, RD. Try to pull that off instead of dropping a Cross bike on a new MTB group. IF road and MTB are interchangeable, as far as the wiring.

My wife and I are planning a tandem for about year from now. the XTR setup looks like it would be the perfect system for a tandem. It works with road levers too so hydraulic brakes too. I only need to see if the road levers work the front derrallieur. It has been suggested that the road levers only would work for a double but I don't think the MTB levers have more than 2 switches so I think I have an option for a triple too

Another place wireless will be helpful: travel bikes. Breaking down the frame requires breaking down the cables, too. This will reduce it from 3 to 1.

RD-M9050 $664 not available yet but here's the manual. So guess tamating @$1300-1400 for the upgrade I would like like to do.

LOL.....$660 for a RD?!?

Chainlove.com had a Chorus EPS rear der on the other day for a similar price and it was something like 25% off.

Complete idiocy....

$660 for a disposable part? Wow! (I've seen a few trashed RDs in minor crashes; the kind we shave our legs for because we expect them to happen.) Suppose you trash the right brifter at the same time. What does that cost? (I kept my old racing days SunTour Cyclone going for 15 years by periodically going to shops and buying Cyclones with the other half trashed from their spare parts box for $5.)

I know I sound hopelessly retro, but a few things aren't about to change and crashes are one of them. Great marketing to get customers to cough up most of a grand for a routine slide!

(I picture a salesman telling a family man that this super plan which pays out hundreds of thousands has one drawback he should be aware of; that it will cost his heirs a million in the remote possibility that he should die before the plan matures in 50 years. Naw, that will never happen.)

Oh, you poor souls! You just don't get it. I'm sure you are extremely happy with your friction shifters and manual transmission cars, but a lot of people have moved on since 1930. Guess what...technology can actually make certain things better. Yes, better!! Electronic shifting is simply easier than mechanical. I know you all think that cyclists need to be educated on "how" to properly shift and all, but at the end of the day, electronic is faster and smoother than mechanical. It's called progress. As an owner of a car with DSG Quattro transmission and drivetrain, I don't need to know how it works. I don't need to know how to service it. It does the job I ask it to and that is to simply DRIVE!! Same goes with these electronic bike transmissions! Wouldn't it be nice to have a gear system on a bike work flawlessly while my heart-rate is screaming and trying to manage slippery rocks? Yeah, it would. Same goes for road bikes. Pretty darn nice to have the front derailleur automatically trim while I'm focused on other significantly more important things, such as the next turn in the road.

I'm a traditional roadie, no doubt. However, pretty sick of seeing so many people shooting down true advancements that aren't completely marketing driven. These new systems are leaps and bounds ahead of what we were using 20 years ago. Why discard them? Because you'd rather use some ancient friction shifter that allows you to feel superior to other cyclists that don't know how to operate them? I'm not without fault here either. I hate the idea of disc brakes on road bikes but after using them on my personal mountain bike, I can see the appreciate the benefits.

The prices will come down, naturally. Shimano needs to amortize their development costs and what better way than with an extremely premium product like XTR. But the advantage is that they only develop the electronics once. The changes are limited to mainly materials at that point, thus, the prices drop down to XT level. The early adopters pay the premium and are happy to do so.

After riding with Di2 for about 4 years now, it's amazing stuff. I can't go back to mechanical now. It's just that good.

6ix, I know well why I am not moving to brifters for a while. They are like a new, better recreational drug. Once you go there, you cannot go back. And just like the drug, life isn't better/happier when you get there. But it does go downhill significantly if you ever have to go back.

(There is one innovation that I bought as soon as I saw it as an aftermarket part that has made my life better. Aero brake levers. I used to fantasize about a lever I could drape the palm of my hand over in my '79s racing days. Now I do that a large percentage of my riding.)

And as far as being "extremely happy with your friction shifters and manual transmission cars", well, I drive a Prius; about as far from that as you can get though being forced to go back to my 5-speed Tercel would be no hardship at. These days, only about 13% of my miles are on DT bikes and 7% on early index. The vast majority are fixed because that is where I am happiest (and isn't that what this is all about?)

But seriously,
smart aleck jabs aside, my turn to pontificate:
If you like it, whatever "it" is, and actually ride it: good for you.

Whoa, there....I'm not dissing Di2. Hell, I ride it.

I'm dissing the incredibly ridiculous prices that are being charged. By going with last years 10 speed Ultegra stuff, I got two shifters, F&RD and a battery for less than what they want for current model RD.

Paying top retail dollar ( at these prices) for marginal performance gain is simply crazy. I'm perfectly happy picking up the scraps from last year.
