Any of you single speeders out there using a gor belt drive. A couple of riders are using them on there 29ers and tell me they are indestructible and last longer than chains. Whatcha think

Dave Levy, TiCycles, is a big fan of belts. They work really well, are clean, maintenance free and quiet. Drawback: The bike must be built/modified to accommodate them. (The chainstay or seatstay must
break" to allow the belt to be removed.)
I am pretty sure I am correct in saying that Dave can modify steel and ti bikes to retrofit them for belts. (He has a neat set-up; good enough that he does it for other builders.)
I'm not ready for belts yet. Still using chains and suspenders! And as one who loves fixed gears and changing cogs, I am pretty well wedded to the old technology. But maybe someday I'll have a belt drive with an 8-speed hub. (That clean belt would be a treat!)

Kootna, Dave also installs S & S couplers for Moots as well as other frame builders. (I've seen a brand new Moots at Dave's shop.) He's gotten so good at it that other builders would rather just send their frames to him than bother to start a new procedure.

The belt has also been a hit with tandems to replace the timing chain. lasts about 6 times longer than a chain. Usually use a normal bike chain for the drive but a couple of bikes with internal transmission hubs or BB transmissions use a gates belt for that too.

what 79 said, we have a frame builder south of here, he can do it pretty easily with some Paragon drop outs, SPOT bikes has a pretty sweet set up with a split drop out that works very well.
I like belts, I love clean they stay, but the drawback here in the dry southwest is, dust will make them squeak like crazy, most guys just spray it down with water occasionally, but it's only a temporary fix
currently using an Izumi chain the Ritchey P-29er, works well, but once that wears out, I think I'm going to switch to a KMC X9SL, I have one of the ALL-CITY Nature Boy, that chain is oh so quiet, and very strong

i wonder if you could use belt dressing that's made for squeaky car fan belts?
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.
