Asked why he was racing so hard when he had the time trial national title that he last won in 2012 and might normally have been better off resting for that, Rogers just smiled and said, "I am a real racer. I saw a good opportunity open there. To tell you the truth I only had one gear because my battery failed. I had one gear for half the race [a 53x 14]. I tell you what … had I had of had gears it would have been close.

I call BS. I thought that when the battery starts to die, the front derailleur shifts to the inner ring and then when the battery fully dies, the rear shifts to the middle of the cassette.

Don't think that is accurate, stink....but I can't recall the exact details. I'll have to look it up.
However, you are assuming that the battery "failed" due to a lack of power / juice. There are multiple forms of "failure". I have had my cables become disconnected several times...the net result being that I have been stuck in a given gear for the remainder of the ride. The battery may have been defective, etc.
You'd like to think that a professional mechanic would ahve his riders' batteries topped off before a race....but then again, pros still roll tubulars now and then.

yeah, you're probably right about the type of failure and mechanics doing their job. Doubt it was a empty battery.

If the rear died and the system shift to the middle, Is a 14 in the middle of any 10 or 11 speed cassette?

Point taken. However, there is something to be said for the idea of the more items there are to fail, the higher likelihood that one of them will. N
