Is there a general rule of thumb for how many links to remove when switching from semi-compact (52/36) to compact (50/34)? Same for standard 53/39. I'm guessing it's only a link or two at the max. I'm currently running the 52/36 but sometimes swap to the compact rings when a climb has me scared.

Prob won't help, I went from a 53/39 to a 50/34 and had to remove 2 links. I'm thinking you might not have to remove any...

I thought it depended on the derailleur dimensions.

Yeah, there is a way to check chain slack. I would not remove any links at at first......
