Holy Hell - Assos pricing is out of control

A whole bunch of Assos stuff has been cycling through today on Chainlove.com. I am completely STUNNED by how much that stuff costs.

yeah, I know this is not breaking news by any stretch, but it is really kinda staggering. They had some pair of super bib winter tights that were ON SALE for about $350, witha suggested retail over $600. WTF?!?!?!?!?

Also just saw a pair of "normal" tights for $150 on sale, with a retail over $350.

Even their "over 50% off" sale prices are stoopid high. Just insane what some people are willing to pay for bike stuff......
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Why does cycling specific stuff cost so much in general? Is it because there is less demand, or are cyclists just willing to pay more?

I never got the Assos thing, that stuff is ridiculously over priced, it makes Rapha's stuff look affordable!!
totally insane, but some people will buy it. I wonder what wholesale pricing is?

I did buy some bib knickers and tights a few years back but the pieces were 40% off which put them within range of normaly priced stuff at regular prices. At that time I couldn't find what wanted in my size in town. All the tights I could find had chamois or were too light. The knickers were just cheap enough that I thought I would try them to see what the fuss was. They are very comfortable but not $200 more comfortable than the Castelli I just bought for $140 at MEC.

It's interesting how we all can justify some expenditure but not others. I hate cheapness for the sake of cheapness, but I also hate waste like disposable parts. Or cheap stuff that is a waste of materials that ends up in landfill quickly. I will spend the bucks for gear that lasts. Alpha SV for skiing? Damn straight. I buy top shelf bike parts because the downstream stuff disappoints and fails. $450 shorts? No that won't make my butt happier. $50 non bib shorts? NFW, my butt and comfort is worth more than that.

I've got 3 pairs of Pearl Izumis for $100 that I have worn each once a week for going on two years so in this case there is no need to spend more. Other kit costing more has worn out and gone to the landfill in just a few months.
But I haven't worn any Assos so who knows what I am missing!?

I did work for a guy once who told the company at a quarterly meeting that if we increase our selling price we would be more profitable.

I have accumulated a fair amount of Assos. Except for 2 pair of shorts the rest is cold weather or base layers. Most everything on deep discount.
My oldest piece is a pair of airlock tights I got at least 8 winters ago and barely showing signs of wear.
Super comfortable and the parts all contribute to the whole.
The pricing in N america is higher than euro after conversion. Germany or ireland is far cheaper than Colorado. Some bits from their factory outlet but these are all out of production Styles.
Yes it is very expensive if you pay full pop and even on sale it is often a little more than the other high end stuff. It lasts, it fits, it works very well.

I just bought some of their older s5 series shorts at relatively deep discounts recently. I'd say they were very good value for the money invested.

Full retail - it is very expensive gear but good for them if they have a loyal customer base.

Given the time we spend on our bikes, I am seeing that it's not as crazy as one would think. I have been really focused on contact points and replaced my saddle and turned over some pieces in my kit recently and it's made a nice difference in my enjoyment of the few hrs I can sneak in these days.

The $800 jackets are not something I'd pursue, but I could see $300 on a quality jacket if it's nice. Given what some women spend on purses, that's chump change!
