I always hate having to scrounge up cable ferrules (the end ones, the crimp ones, brake, gear, etc., etc., etc.). You go to a store, and you feel like a shmuck because either they give them to for free, and you feel guilty, and really want some extras beyond what they gave you, or they charge you like $0.50 each, and you equally feel like a shmuck. So after much Googling, Nashbar carries all the different types in containers of 100. I now have a lifetime supply!!

Yeah, I still get stuff like this from Nashbar.
Thankfully, I am now riding enough again to have recently changed a derailleur and brake cable, changed a tube by the roadside (2 sets of close-spaced small holes - must have been staples in a piece of wood), and tonight I'll change the tire, which is overdue.
No e-shifting for me, thanks.
Some time ago Zinn had an article about soldering cable ends, for those with the time and inclination to do so. Probably saves weight ;-)
I actually need some 'cable donuts' to reduce sable slap. I tried a piece of real narrow diameter tubing, a 1 cm or so piece with a lengthwise slit to fit over the cable. It sorta worked. |

Bought a bunch on Nashbar a few years ago along with cables so that I would always have some kicking around in the basement shop. Although I must say that my 2YO Specialized has electronic shifting, so now I have less maintenance to do on the bike. I must say that I love the shifting. When I got it, I was very skeptical that it was all hype to get you to get a new gruppo. I really have no problems with it.
Last week, the battery started to die. My fault as I knew that it was getting low and kept forgetting to recharge the battery (it lasts me months). I was on vacation and the charger was at home. It locked out the big chainring. I just spun at high cadence. Not a big deal. We were vacationing in the mountains and doing a lot of climbing which rendered my big ring useless anyhow.
My LBS has told me he think the disk brake on the road bike will also transform the bike. Again, I am skeptical. We shall see. I did ride a mtn bike with them and liked it. Not so sure how I would like it on the road. |

Dip the end in alcohol, let dry, apply a dab of superglue. It will keep the cable from unraveling but it will be sharp like in getting stuck. Then add cable end cap

I prefer the free LBS option. They get plenty other bussiness from me. |

| I always used to just throw in a fewthe ferrels and Cable ends in for free when someone bought new Cables and Housing when I was at the shop |
