I want to hate disc brakes on road bikes because I think the technology is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, but the other day I was up at the cross course talking to some teammates and of the 8 of them , 7 had cross bikes with disc brakes. I had to admit the bikes looked good with the disc, better I would say. Something about them looked right. The rim brake bike just looked so non high tech. I'm not sure if this is going to carry over to my view of road bikes with disc brakes, I sure hope not, but it sure made me think a cross bike with disc brakes looked cool. I'm sure if I went into the shop to buy a new cross bike I would have a pull to the ones with disc. I'm not sure my brain could talk my inner 'cool' voice out of it.

If I read your post right, from your perspective it's an issue of aesthetics.
Here's a different emphasis: how well do your friends' bikes brakes work compared to rim brakes, in all the conditions cross bikes encounter?

I've got one cx race and a lot of training on my Focus Mares w/ hydraulic disc.
Soon much better than cantis! Much more controlled, no worry about wet braking or inconsistent grab waiting for the brake pads to squeegee off the mud/ snow/ ice/ water.
Literally fingertip control. A year ago at Jingle Cross I dropped out on day three when my hand started cramping up from squeezing the lever so hard to get the brakes to work. Admittedly it was snowing, on a steep down hill and I'm a feeble old man but there were others who also cramped from the death grip dropping off the backside of Mt. Krumpit.

Spotted a good number of disc equiped road bikes at RAMROD and Haute Route. It would seem to be a done deal for better or for worse.

cross bikes with discs do look good, goes with the rugged bada$$ look.
I'm with you though, still not too sure about how a road bike looks with discs, but I'm sure it will grow on me
That Focus Mares is a sweet ride, and sweet looking ride Dale......
