I've had mine for 8 winters and it's finally bit the dust.

It's got to be bomb-proof, all-weather, serviceable (though infrequent), and able to handle some weight (occasional touring).

loose bearings vs sealed?

Any recommendations?

White Industries, Friggin' bombproof, Industry Nine, I have heard good things about these, and you can always count on Chris Kings stuff, Paul's are very nice also

Sealed for sure

The WI hubs are loose bearings, no? What to do you think about how they set the preload, with a little tiny set screw? I have a set of WI on my summer bike but I have to re-adjust the preload every few months. Not crazy about that design. See the little hole on the right side of this hub.

Isn't Phil Wood still the standard if that is your requirement?  I just went to the PW website.  11-speed hubs are available but are not warranted for MTB.  I couldn't get the MTB link to work so I couldn't see the cassette details, they make them for 150 and 135, disc and non disc, they come QR and you can upgrade to bolted.  (I did that upgrade on a road front when I went to the Jahdd lowrider racks that are so stiff that a wide QR is a real hassle.)

I see the WI are sealed bearings. The CK also has a set screw on the tension cap but it appears to be threaded also. That should be a lot better design IMO.

Phil Wood, hmm. Maybe. 2x price and 2x weight of Chris King. Is it 2x better?

Phil was cutting edge a few decades ago. Their current mtb stuff is just stupid heavy.
Just say no to Chris King unless you like that fishing reel sound.
Shimano makes good stuff.
I'm riding DT Swiss 340s (I think no longer made), pretty bombproof. The 240s allow changes in hub and axle types but are very expensive.

Chinook, I have never had that issue, weird? I have a set that I have not had to touch in 3 years? What I like about WI also, is, how easy it is switch from QR to thru axles, nice and simple

a buddy has some new Chris Kings, no more angry bees sound with his, but he may have worked some juju into them

Every thing I have heard about the Industry Nine stuff is that they are pretty sweet, and bomb proof, not cheap though

funny story about Phil Wood's BB, the thing was kind of stiff, but still spun really well, we called them and they said. "Yeah, the break in is about 2 years"

My WI are a road set. Maybe they are not as burly as the mtb hubs.

Industry nine is out cuz I am going to get a 36h for loaded touring.

So it's between the DT360 and the CKs. I've seen several of the CKs around town and have yet to hear the reputed angry bees. I like the fact that the CKs can be regreased without replacing the bearings. I don't think the DTs can be regreased. I've been impressed with the CK BB. Being able to regrease that every few months in the winter is really cool. I wish the CKs had the centerlock disc option.

I did not know that the CK spinning reel sound has been fixed. How about the finicky play adjustment? That was the other common complaint.
Regarding DT, the freehub is aluminum, light but can deform over time. You might find it annoying to have to wiggle and jiggle to remove cassettes. There is a steel alternative. A titanium option would be cool, but I don't think it's made.
