Looking for some fast wheels - what say you all?

I was hit by a car last year which busted my Boyd carbon clinchers which I loved. I would notice a 2mph increase in average speed riding those wheels versus my alloy wheels.
I am looking to replace them and obviously the Boyds are in consideration, but I am also looking at the other choices out there and there are quite a few options between Reynolds, Specialized, Enve, Williams, November and others.
What do you ride and how did you make your decision? These would be used for training, fast group rides and racing.
Any and all advice is appreciated!! |

Hey Hab! Good to see you 'round these parts.
All the options you listed are solid, but price points will obviously vary tremendously. Another option you may want to consider is Flo Wheels. Direct-to-consumer wheels that are VERY aero (rank right there with the best wheels available) and very affordable. Availibility can be tough as they usually bring in a shipment and sell them pretty quickly, so you need to try and time your purchase with an incoming shipment. Last few shipments have not sold out immediately, so it is getting much easier.
Added advantage to the Flo wheels is an alloy brake track - reliable braking and no need for special brake pads.
If money were no object, I would probably buy myself some Specialized wheels right now. The CLX 60's test extremely well, and the CLX 64 (I think that is the model name) are awesome wheels. Enve would also be high on my list.

Anything from your list that you can afford. Probably add zipps to the list as well. That's all I can add as the past two sets I've bought have not been for speed. I love the wider rim beds. Crazy what a difference a few mm and about 10psi less will do to the feel of the ride.
Go with a former(?) forum member and get November. Saw a pair of really cool retro red/white November with dt shifters hanging from a local shop a few weeks ago. |

| Welcome back hab. Price limit? I can't see forking out 3k for a set of wheels. One of the guys at my LBS used to work for Williams Wheels. He built me a rear wheel (boring Mavic OP with Campy Record hub). Best wheel I've ever used, and I've bee through a lot of them (if that means anything). Comes down to who builds the wheel I guess. My old Klein was a "fast bike". Might have had something to do with the funky Rolf Vector Comp wheels. Wheels do make a diff...... |

If you have lots of time, here's a interesting article about building up a set of Enves. One thing that sticks out to me is that the spoke holes on the Enves are molded, not drilled. The author claims that most if not all other wheels are drilled.

| You might try building a set online. You select the rim, hub, spokes, spoke pattern, nipples. I've had wheels built by Excel Sports and Colorado Cyclist. Both were excellent builds. They usually throw in some type of discount that covers shipping or the build. I looked at eBay, but kind of leery as you don't know who built the wheel. I used to have my LBS build wheels, but they never have anything on stock (sigh), they have to order it, etc. Also look at reviews by wheel builders. I must say I almost had heart failure looking at the prices for some of the carbon rims. Anyway, you can mess around online with different builds and see what they cost. |

| Enve, not sure how fast they are, just love their stuff, rode a pair of the MTB wheels for a bit, they were pretty sweet!! Not Cheap though! $$$$ |
