Anyone riding / considering a 1x system for the road?

Not certain I see the appeal for the road....I get it for MTB or cross, but you don't really have those same issues on the road.
Even if you can achieve the same range of gearing on a 1x system as a 2x, there are significant jumps in between gears in terms of gear size. Add in any hills of significant size and that issue only becomes worse. At best, you are only gonna be able to run a 50T CR, and likely a 48 or 46T. Unless you have a huge FTP, I guess.....
I can see having a 1x road bike here in pancake-flat Chicago (of FL, etc), but just can't see the benefits anywhere else. |

There was a good article in the latest issue of Road Bike Action that went into detail on the new 3T cassette that supposedly solves the gear-range issues. I'll freely admit to being extremely closed-minded when it comes to this stuff, just like with disc brakes BUT their explanation basically said they eliminated all of the redundant gears that a typical 22-spd has. So, their lowest is equal to a 36x28 and the high gear being close to a 52x11. That's what I run now and it works for the terrain around here where I can be grunting it out on a 17% climb or flying down the backside. My compact pro works well but I do have to shift back and forth with the front derailleur A LOT, and then find myself getting close to cross-chaining. Even with Di2 automatically adjusting the FD trim, it can be a pain.
Long winded there but it's all to say that I'm starting to open my mind up to the whole thing.
Or it's just a marketing ploy by SRAM to get around the fact they still can't design a good front derailleur. |

CK - agreed, you get bigger jumps, that is issue. Now this puts adding those extra cogs in back into context:
"As Vroomen puts it, ‘I tell people, if currently 1x11 doesn’t do everything you want, don’t focus on changing the “1” at the front; soon they will be changing the “11” at the back."
So there you have it, once they can fit enough cogs in back and make the gearing jumps with a 1x setup correspondingly smaller, the front derailleur indeed becomes obsolete. |

Well, Vroomen’s statement sounds kinda stoopid...”if it doesn’t work for you, it will at some point in the future”....OK, i’ll Just wait then. 
Around here, I could be very happy with a 1x system...schitt, I basically run that now. I NEVER use my little CR here. An ideal for me around here would be a 1x with a 11x23...and a CR of a 52. There is only one hill around here where that would be an issue for me, and it is mercifully short. But if I went up just a bit into WI, no way that would work. I could maybe try a 50 w/ an 11-28, but I think that would still be pretty tough.
Was watching Larry Warbasse today in the Tour de Suisse and just don’t know how AquaBkue is riding in those hills on a 1x system. |

wow...a 9T cog? I'd gladly give up the 9 to get a 16t cog on that cassette.
But that is a gearing assortment that I could almost work with...most of the jumps are pretty small, until you get to the end of the range, where bigger gaps are OK. I'd have to run the gearing calculations to see what CR I would have to use with that cassette.
Of course you would also need a long cage RD to work with it....
A guy around here who does our Sat AM ride has a 3T Strada...love the concept. But he also hasn't ridden it anywhere that has hills, so he couldn't really speak to how well it works in an area that has geographical differences. |

To me the 9-10-11 cassette is not optimum. 10% gaps in the high speed., high power, high wind resistance sector? The old 13-17 corncob was better gearing for that. The 9-11-12 cassette is better. Pick your CR so you never have to use smaller than 11 on the flat and have a 20% overdrive for downhills.
My good bike, 9-speed, uses Campy wheels and cassettes. I often run the cassette 12-14-15 with a 53 up front. (I'd have to go back 30 years to need bigger than 53-14 on the flat.)
I have all three Campy last cogs, 12, 13 and 14. For real killer days, I sometimes go the 14. Means a lot more coasting but late in those days, better legs (because I did all that coasting!) and one more cog where I really want it, either a 16 or 18. (And when you are really whipped and have to go upwind, 14-19,21 is a sweet cluster!)

| Tiny cogs have higher resistance, too. Wouldn’t affect my modest motor, but for a professional in competition, maybe enough to matter. |
