How fast do you want to go when you run out of talent?

Went mountain biking with a buddy yesterday. In addition to being a better mountain biker, he's on full suspension, I'm on a hard tail.

He's totally smoking me on the downhill sections and it got me jonesing, again, for a nice FS carbon mbt bike until the thought hit me... I'm going to run out of talent either way and when I do how fast do I want to crash, 20mph on the hard-tail or 30mph on the full suspension?

I am again content with the paid for 6 year old Haro mbt bike

I'm ok with getting smoked.

Ride another 10hrs and I'm back on your wheel.

Sorta related. For my road fix gears, I've started using very wide handlebars. (Well, very wide for my skinny shoulders.) 43cm and up. Easier for climbing out of the saddle in big gears but just as important, better descending. Better meaning both more control - that width- and slower! - more air resistance.

And aero gear, wheels and frames? Biggest effect would be more speed downhill. Biggest long term deficit of hundreds of thousands of miles of cycling - bone density loss. Here saving money also seems smart.

Alternate option - go just as fast on the FS as you do on your hardtail, but safer.

So I vote for option 3 - go 20mph on the FS and don't crash because you have better control.

Riding a FS (2011 Yeti ASR 26er) has made me a better mountain biker - uphill and downhill. That and a dropper post. Also, skeptical as I have been of the 29er concept, I now ride one (2017 Yeti ASR 29er) and I wish I made the move sooner. New geometry (longer top tube - shorter stem, slacker head angles, wider handlebars) don't affect climbing as much as I thought it would, but really help on the downhills. Obviously the other part is the rider: practice and know your trails. I still ride the 29er like I did the 26 and pick my lines carefully, that makes me smoother and, ultimately, faster, not that it's a goal.
The good news about tech trails is that it'd be hard to hit 30 mph.

DS is a no brainer for rec riding and serious riding on tough terrain. But Al is fine and a lot cheaper and tougher than CF. I like 29ers for the plushest ride but smaller wheels have many advantages. YMMV.

PS dropper seat posts are the greatest invention since tubeless.

You are riding tubeless, right?

27.5, tubeless, no dropper post. I've looked at adding a dropper post and still might but really don't ride mbt enough to justify throwing that amount of cash at a whole new bike so I'll probably just spend a few hundred and add the post

There is no excuse to ever pass on a new bike....at the end of the day, FS makes MTB adventures more fun and safer.

Buy the bike. N+1.

I just had my old Trek 7 speed Trek w/front suspension, shipped from back East. That will be plenty for as much as I'll be out in this desert. One has to worry more about crashing here and rolling into a cactus. It's not about the speed, but the control.

This. Slice it anyway you want, a FS bike makes you a safer ride with more control.
