Will be moving from Asheville, NC to just outside Boulder, CO next week.  With Hurricane Florence on its' slow march towards us, we're almost certainly going to be driving through some heavy rain but my bike will be on the roof rack.  I have one of those old Performance bike bras for it and am considering placing the entire bike in a thick plastic bag, wrapping it fairly tightly with packing tape in order to reduce the amount of moisture hitting it.

Anyone think this is a bad idea?  My only concern is the build-up of humidity levels that might screw with the bearings and maybe even the wiring.

Just let it get wet...it shouldn't be a problem. If you use the bike bra or wrap the thing, you are gonna destroy your gas mileage. You'll spend more in gas than you will in maintenance from the rain.

Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

For the record, that's halfway across the country. By the title I had you going to the other coast.

Nice move although you were already in a nice spot. Chad McDaniel is in Boulder. Not sure what his handle was or whether he is still poking around here (he is on FB). I met him briefly in 2013 after doing my personal mini Tour of CO (Trail Ridge Rd, Mt Evans, Independence Pass, Cottonwood westside, Sugarloaf).

My obvious suggestion would be to avoid driving in the particular window but I take it that is not an option. I wouldn't bother with the wrapping. What you should do is fit your bike in the back seat and throw the other junk up top of the car. Back in 1994 when I moved from California to Onterrible, everything I owned including the bike fit in the back seat of a Toyota Tercel. First time I passed through CO. Hitting the flatlands after that was a terrible experience.

But OC, I'm going a-CROSS the COUNTRY. So, cross-country. Man, why do you have to spoil it for me? ha ha

Unfortunately can't fit it inside car. That will be packed with our dog and 2 cats. Everything else is going in a rooftop bag. Will be living out of suitcases for a few weeks until PODS arrive.

So it sounds like the bike just goes on top of the car without any protection at all. What about all the bugs?

I'm a stickler for detail 6ix - haha

OK so sounds like you have a follow-up delivery a few weeks later. What about shipping the bike as part of the larger delivery? You could forego biking for bridging period which doesn't sound terribly long and it's the offseason anyway. Or you could rent local to bridge the period. I rented from University Cycles in 2013. A Roubaix with Ultegra setup. Nice shop; well stocked.

BTW - have a friend who is on Great Divide trail in Montana at moment, heading south. He started in Vancouver and took BC Trail first before heading south. Going to San Diego and then Baja. He should be passing through CO in not too distant future.

Back in the day (90 & 91), I drove out to Casper WY from DC for the Casper Classic....middle of the summer and it was a bug massacre (both ways).

Just wash 'em off when you arrive....althtough they should be as bad this time of the year as opposed to late June / early July.

I actually rented a Roubaix from University back in 2015! Took it with us to Steamboat for some riding. Was a bit pricey at nearly $100 a day though. That's a bit steep.

It's going to be about 4 weeks until we move into our house and get the PODS so don't want to be without my road bike for that long. I want to ride as soon as I roll into town even if the altitude will kill me at first. Don't want to miss what remains of good weather for the season.

For my sanity, 4 days is too long to be away from the bike.

One of the great advantages about living in CO is that you can easily ride year round (albeit with occasional snow days). even when it is cold, it doesn't feel that cold when you are in the sun. Also any snow is usually gone in a few days (and roads are rideable long before that).

Added bonus...warm days (50-60*+) are not uncommon throughout winter.

So many people have this image of Denver / Boulder as being a snowbound wasteland in the winter and it just isn't close to reality....

I am a fan of wrapping vulnerable spots with magic tape or similar - brifters, headsets. Quick and easy.
PS: get the h*ll out of there, ASAP. I'm in the Richmond VA area and quaking in my boots. NC will be hit much harder. This is no joke!

One more suggestion: Lube everything, including the chain, before you set off.
OC- It's not half-way; it's 2/3s of the way.

I'd put tape or something around bearing entries to keep the wind from blowing grit in them.

Fyi, Chad is mahoba.

I've heard of bad things happening with loose tarps on cars, as the constant battering of flapping plastic takes off paint. I took four bikes on a roof rack from NY to CO, and from CO to PA, and never worried if it rained. But that's me.

Smokey. 1466 miles versus 2590 to San Fran. That's 57 percent 😉
