Mrs, CK was gonna get me a fat bike fro Xmas and Performance was blowing out the SE F@R bike....nabbed one for $700. Nothing fancy, basically Deore level components, but should be good for some winter snow riding!! Pics to follow...

That looks hopelessly non-aero CK. Disappointing LOL.

OC, this is just a start. Next year, those wheels will be full on discs. (Not much choice here. Obviously the rims need to go a bunch deeper but they are so wide that by the time you have a decent airfoil (aspect ratio) the rim has to be deeper than the distance to the hub.

Next, those knobbie things gotta go! Matt tread. And do something about the handlebars. (CK has to keep in mind that when he is riding in the blizzard coming off the Lake Michigan , aero matters!)

Honestly riding in snow and ice, clip ons are not a wise choice. At those speeds, not much of an advantage. A aero helmet does have its benefits in the cold. Booties are also a cold areo choice.

I was having my own N+1 moment earlier. Woke up to find the package my housemate brought in yesterday; from a Bike Forums member. Sugino Mighty cranks. 175s. The cranks I used to race.

Now I have to put a bike together around them. 1980s race frame. Sewups. (Did I just say that?) No big cogs. DT of course. (Except SunTour top-mounted DTs are better than just OK. So are aero brakes. I wanted both when I raced in 1977. I used to hit the right shifter with my knee climbing walls and slamming the chain onto the 13 tooth. And on my long rides I fantasied about having the webbing between my index and middle fingers surgically cut so I could slide my hands over the brake hoods.

Six. I really want to stay at the prime number, 5. But 5+1 = 6. That is a fact so I guess I have to just accept it.

No, I would never seriously consider putting aero bars on the fat bike.... Have booties, plus winter riding shoes...hopefully the two together will be sufficient for really cold days. Add in some Bar Mitts and I'll see how far I can push my limits this year.

Never thought about the aero benefits of bar mitts. Much more stable than clipons on ice. Plus, clip-ons off road can be dicey since you need to brake more than a road bike.

Once you've had fat you'll never go back...

CK, the winter interval training I did occasionally in my racing days was running across fields of heavy New England snow on snowshoes. Big-time overlap with cycling muscles (especially the muscles to pull across the top of the pedal stroke - each kick forward done hard enough to shed the snow on the shoes).

My parents lived just outside Boston and had access to the neighbors fields that had once been farmland and stayed in those families for generations. The fields were not big. 100, 200 yards at most. My heartrate would be off the charts.

CK - it's your Bar Mitzvah this winter? You're a lot younger than I figured.
