Okay, full disclosure.  I got married on March 20!  To a sweet lady who, when we first started dating three years ago, discovered a love for cycling at the age of (undisclosed).  She will never be into racing or gut crunching riding but would like her bike to be speedier and more efficient.

So, of course the topic of upgrading her wheels came up.  Currently she has the stock version of whatever came on a Trek women's specific Domane SL5 a couple years ago.

Our local shop said they could build her a nice set with carbon rims, non-aero, good for our riding conditions in Vermont, for about $700.  Another shop wants to sell her some Bontraeger carbons for about $1,200.

I get it that reducing weight on rotational parts is a good way to make a bike more efficient (this may be the only road bike she buys given her undisclosed age and riding habits) but am concerned that she may be overbuying, especially with the Bontraeger (am I spelling Trek correctly?) option.  And, unfortunately, the local small shop that will do the build for less is having trouble getting parts, specifically spokes for a wheel build.

Any suggestions from you wise folks out there?

Many thanks!
Dale

Bravo! Wishing you both joy and good health!
Regarding riding with a less serious or slower partner: I'm pondering getting my lovely bride of many decades an ebike. I can huff and puff while she keeps up or drops me if she wants.

Congratulations thinline.

Recommendation - ride what you have. Whatever comes on a Trek Domane should be fine for intends and purposes.

It comes down to you slowing it down (haha).

A set of carbon hoops for $700 sounds like a pretty damn good deal. Dunno if you'll find a better option than that.

But you can also check out Hunt wheels, which has some really nice wheel options for ~$1k.

Who was the forum member that ran November wheels? Can't recall his screen name....but that would be worth showing some support for. Haven't looked at their options in awhile, though.

Most importantly....congrats, thinline!! That is awesome news...wishing you guys a lifetime of happiness and tailwinds!
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Thanks folks.

As to the advice about slowing down, unfortunately for me she would prefer to speed up rather than have me slow down.  I think she has adopted the "it never gets easier you only go faster" philosophy!

As CK mentions, Dave at November builds some really nice wheels and was an old forum member to boot. I have purchased no fewer than (4) wheel sets from him and would highly recommend them. He can build whatever you want at various price points. Congrats.

Congrats on tying the knot!! Another vote for November from me. I have two sets of wheels from Dave that are a joy to ride and I've never needed to do anything but periodically check the bearings.
