Looking for a bike box to travel with (planes) and do not want to break the bank. I found a B&W International Bike Box ii for $300 roughly on sale. Anyone have any thoughts on this product?

That looks like the bike box my buddy used to take his bike to Iceland for The Rift....it is freaking HUGE I have a picture somewhere of me curled up inside it with room to spare.
I'll check with him...and I think he paid a lot more than that. |

I'm out of date but used to ship a bit. Hope this 2c is useful.
Be aware of precise airline regs regarding specific size issues (used to be sum of linear dimensions but I am out of date), may be specific to your airline.
Nested cardboard bike boxes and a ton of closed cell foam fixed with zip ties defied the airline gorillas and I saved some money back in the day. But it was a small hassle and once I had a *really good* hard case, never looked back.
A potential third option, don't know for sure for bicycle but has been a good budget alternative for motorcycles: "You ship it" has saved me some bucks shipping motorcycles and has been reliable. They are a clearing house to subcontract with private drivers who are driving here and there as a profession or lifestyle. I would think they would love a boxed bicycle, easy peasy compared to the cars and other larger and heavier stuff they move. Might need to be weather proofed if they don't specify enclosed. Or some competitor. If I were flying to a bicycle tour today with my moto experience, I'd start by researching this option. The airlines basically suck now and the surface shipping has been crappy based on my Amazon etc experience. YMMV

LSD, definitely checking a variety of options. So far, my research shows most airlines have either done away with oversize fees for bikes or made the size limit large enough to accommodate a good size bike box. And anything up to 50 pounds is just a checked bag. So, not too bad if you play it right.
Cosmic, you may be thinking of another box that company makes, looks very similar, is definitely bigger, and costs a few hundred more. Looks like an awesome box but I am trying to get into the lower price tier because I will only use it on occasion.

Yeah, my buddy said that he thought his was the larger one. But I think the one you linked to will be sufficiently large for just about any road / gravel bike.

I don't travel for work as much as I used to. The last trip to Ireland with the bike was sometime in 2009 or so. You are welcome to borrow my bike case. One of my brothers lives in Essex Junction, and a niece lives in Newport Center. I might be able to get the case to one of them sometime in the next few months.

Thanks, smokey. That is really generous of you. I will keep that in mind. Turns out my wife has a slight meniscus tear (yup, right at the start of ski season). She met with the doc to discuss options so she has to decide on surgery or not, or waiting until next fall to get through ski and bike season. She starts picking up ski school students this weekend so we will get a good idea of soreness etc. Fingers crossed!

Nice that they can do that through a scope. My first meniscus tear operation (1972... quit laughing) it was three days in the hospital, six week on crutches after they doc filleted my knee open. The scar runs from center of the kneecap past the side of the knee. Frankenstein-like look.
The next time is was outpatient following a scope. Went to work the next day; being self-employed I had a tyrant for a boss, the jerk.

Coincidence: I visited an orthopedic today to evaluate my knees. I knew I have osteoarthritis, but I didn't know how extensive. From the x-rays, my medial cartilage is gone on both knees. No need for surgery, but the doctor prescribed focussed physical therapy to improve range of motion and lessen pain. He encouraged me to continue cycling, swimming (I recently joined the Y with a pool.), and running. I actually quit running a while ago and now just jog, except when chasing the grandkids.

| Buddy’s 16 YO daughter (volleyball) just had to have her meniscus repaired. Pretty extensive tear….she was in PT the next day after outpatient surgery. She will be 6 weeks non-weight bearing and 4 mos total recovery. |
