I remember back to the days when no one used sunscreen. Suntan lotion was just that - lotion. Sunburns and skin peeling were practically a rite of summer. I life-guarded for many years and got pretty dark skin, so may have issues in the future, but nothing showing up yet, except old-looking skin. these days I use Bullfrog Quckgel SPF 50. I like that it dries well, does not feel like it causes more sweating and does not make a slick, slimey layer on the skin. It is hard to find, however, so i sometimes end up mail ordering it. I also found something similar at Target under their house brand, but it only comes in a metal spray bottle. I don't like those - feels like most of the spray misses me and is wasted, plus breathing the spray can't be good. Any other good products out there you know about?

I've used Neutrogina lotion, just seems to be what my wife stocks at home, think its spf35. Used it for a very sunny midsummer week snow camping on Rainier and didn't get any burns or even barely a tan. Also used it for weeklong bike tours in Colorado. It fits the definition of slick and slimey with all the white residue however but it doesn't have any scent which I like.

After a recent trip to So. Cal. which found me riding in brutal sun and heat, I decided to alter my routine. In the past I've just slathered-on SPF 30 sunscreen, but I neglected to do so on my rides on that trip and got brutalized. It's not just the lack of sun protection, but I suffer mightily from the heat of the direct sun, most notably on my arms, neck, and ears. Even with sunscreen I start to suffer minor heat stroke at ~75 - 80 degrees. While I'll continue to use the sunscreen (if I remember) on my neck and ears, I purchased a pair of those white Pearl Izumi "sun sleeves" to keep the beating rays off my arms. I haven't used 'em yet as I haven't had a chance to ride the bike for a month or so, but when it gets hot later this summer (here in WA) I'll give 'em a try. I bought a pair to leave in So. Cal. for my frequent trips south. I'll probably wear those year-round. I"m anxious to see how they work.

I use Banana Boat 50 with Aloha Gater40+ gel over and around my eyes. The squeeze tube BB 50s can be used to reload the small1 oz tubes using a syringe. (Any pharmacy will happily give you multiply needless syringes if you tell them it's for refilling sunscreen.) Those 1 oz tubes go nicely in tool bags. I like the BB because it seems to work well, applies easily and washes off easily. The gel is much harder to wash off, never "dries" and catches small insects, but it does not run into eyes. When I am sweating, the BB does feel slimey. It's near universally available, not too expensive and my skin likes it so I put up with it.

That said, no sunscreen for me for the next few weeks. Too hard and painful to apply, too hard to get off and the residue will keep bandages and tape from sticking. (At last count 16.)

Don't those count as "sunscreen?" though, not the kind I'd like to use on a regular basis.

For skiing I use Dermatone on my face. I think it's a 35? Durable as it is a thickish vaseline coloured goo. These days in the depths of Efudex hell I wear clothes and a Giro Air Attack helmet because it has few vents. Almost done with the Efudex though. Another few weeks on the right forearm then another 6 weeks on my scalp will hopefully have successfully killed off the bad fast growing cells.

I've been using Neutrogena Ultimate Sport spf70 for a couple of years with good results. Like you, I don't care for spraying spf into the atmosphere and getting a little on my arms/neck.

I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch 45 with Helioplex on my head (I'm bald), and face (a little more sweat than bare). I use Copertone Sport 30 spay on my arms and legs (no more sweat than bare). I agree that breathing the spray could be bad so I always spray it outside and let the breeze blow it away from me. I also don't hold the spray on, I use about three "spritz" per arm and leg. I'm picky about the smell of things and neither of these bother me. For longer exposure I use Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby 60 (titanium and zinc oxide).

I like the Coppertone sport spray, too. Seems like I'm less likely to end up with a sunburn after a few hours of sweating in the sun when I use it compared with most lotions.
Sunscreens have recently moved into high tech with nanoparticles and exotic sunblocking chemicals. Alarmists are alarmed. Dermatologists slather the stuff all over themselves and their kids - no photoaging or skin cancer for them. The current stuff works so well when used properly that it's contributing to low vitamin D levels in many people.

A recent study found that using sunscreen daily actually kept skin "younger" and damaged skin was improved. NYTimes last week.

I do like the spray even thou is a little more expensive but it is less messy and quick. Also when sweating from the forehead the drip in the eye doesn't burn as much so it seems. Anyone know of a lotion that does not cause burning? Like kids lotion maybe? I haven't research it.
