I really don't want to shell out a ton for a set of cx carbon tubulars if I can get a decent set of aluminum rims. I like the look of the Major Tom rims

Suggestions? I'd like to stay under $450.00

Got lots and lots of experience with MTs. They're great. PM me if you need any build advice.

I've had carbon tubulars in the past for cx racing but with all the sand and watery grit and mud the thought of wearing out carbon rims plus having sketchy braking (cue up the disk brake/ rim brake thread) makes me more inclined to go aluminum.

135# and not a masher (read: weaker than a little girl)-- Thinking a 20/24 spoke count, either AmClassic or White Industry hubs, Sapim CX-Ray spokes.

I've entertained the thought of building the wheels but having never done so this might not be the best first project.

Thoughts?

I much prefer the WI hubs. I have all the confirmed spoke lengths etc for that build if you want to try. We also have tons of rims in stick. The build is fairly easy. Go 24/28 2x everything. Building good wheels is 99% diligence and 1% black magic - if there's even that much black magic.

Aluminum rims still work great for cross and they're cheap to replace when you f them up.

With prices the way they are, White Industry hubs alone will run you $400. Throw in rims and spokes and you are closer to $600.
