it might be time for a new fork for the mtb. i can't seem to keep it working. a lot of the new forks have the thru axle instead of a skewer. i have a shimano xt hub. i know some hubs adapt to thru axles. how do i know if mine does? is it obvious?

I don't think you can convert the XT. I have an old perfectly good XTR front hub as proof. QR on a mountain bike is dead. Even on the rear many bikes are going through axle, even hard tails because it reduces the number of standards for a manufacturer to carry.

Take the opportunity to score a new front wheel, trust me. For the price you pay for a fork its worth it. Some types of boutique hubs allow you to replace the end caps so that you can go to the different types of front axles, they usually have sealed bearings. There are 3 types that I am aware of: 9mm qr (which you currently have), 15mm thru-axle (cross country) and 20mm thru-axle (DH).

Get a fork/wheel that will work with the 15mm standard. Your front end will flex a bit less, will go where you point it and your disc brake will always stay aligned. Went tubeless and thru-axle this past year, can't believe I didn't do it sooner. Hopefully, its riding weather where you are

a fork and a front wheel is some serious money.

A thought. Would a Phil Wood hub work? Might give them a call. I put Phils on my winter geared bike. Got tired of massing with the QR with the really stiff new Low Rider racks on the bike. (Jandd; the Blackburns are easy to flex out enough to change wheels). Phil sent me new axle with 6mm hex bolts. Nice!

With Phils, the odds are better you will still have a hub that works after the next iteration of standards. And you know the hub will be worth modifying, even it that change is 15 years from now. (I wish I had gone Phil many years ago. Would have saved me both money had hassle.

not sure about the Phil hubs, the White Industries are the best from what I have seen for conversions lately, but the Azonics I just picked up for the Ritchey had all three adapters for the front, and the 12mm for the rear. I would just upgrade the wheel set, you will not regret it
You can still find some shocks with the QR, but your options are limited, especially if you are looking for a tapered steerer tube, check out the X-Fusion offerings, some Rock Shock still out there with a 9mm QR

i dropped my fork off at the shop. i'm hoping for the best. i put my rigid fork on but i forgot that my disk brakes have a constant howl when hooked up with this fork. so i ordered a new set of shimano disk brakes in hopes of having it at least rideable before the weekend. as far as getting a new fork/wheel set, that's in the range of a whole new bike.

Slightly off topic, but related, so pardon my asking...

I have two sets of Mavic Ksyrium ESs wheels. I tried to put a Shimano XT that fit in one rear wheel onto the other rear wheel. It wouldn't thread in from the NDS past the threads. It will go in from the DS until the end/threads hit the exiting (NDS) of the hub.

In looking at the XT skewer, compared to another skewer, it is clear the diameter is different. I've never had this happen. I know XT is a mtn. skewer and Ksyriums are road wheels, but it worked in one hub, but not in another.

Anyone ever encountered this? Not sure why they'd vary skewer diameter by just a tiny amount.
