I don't know if the POC helmets are better than others in terms of protection, but they are one of the few that seem to promote protection above looks and other non protective features as a reason to purchase. I like the fact that the helmets are really visible.

As far as I can tell, it does not have the MIPS technology. Maybe they have incorporated the same effect through different means, but if they did, I wish POS would say so on their website.
I just E-mailed their HQ n Sweden with that question, I will keep you posted.
Other than that, it looks like a great helmet and the next step up. (I do get a kick out of the Smart phone feature. So, you unload your car after that weekend trip, put the helmet on the garage floor and forget about it. Close the garage door. An ambulance shows up!)

Interesting. But nowhere does BSHI say or imply that a helmet with MIPS is any worse than one without or that there is any drawback to it. And it left open the idea that it could help in the right circumstances. So that leaves me thinking: if there was no drawback and perhaps an advantage and that the advantage just might be another concussion that doesn't happen, why not have it in my next helmet?
Since my current helmet is fairly new, I'll keep waiting with my eyes open.

| I was thinking the same thing, it doesn't seem like there is a drawback to MIPS other than a little cost. But I wouldn't ditch my current helmets for MIPS. Some of the POC ski helmets use EPP, expanded polypropylene which can withstand multiple hits as it rebounds after compression. They have a race ski helmet with D30 at top front of the helmet to help absorb hits on the gates. They have a new technology that tells you when the helmet has had too many hits and needs to be retired. Good stuff from POC. |

Andy, I got a nice E-mail from a rep at their Europe Customer Service promptly after this thread started. She stressed how they were focusing on the weight. I wrote back that for me and probably a lot of others, a few grams more weight in exchange for the MIPS technology would be easy to accept.
Today I got a E-mail from POC's product manager pasted below:
Hi Ben,
Thanks for your time and dedicated emails!
Creating our first road helmet, the Octal, we managed to maintain a high level of coverage and protection and at the same time keeping the weight below 200 grams, thanks to the unibody shell construction. We are working on several parallel projects of different versions of Octal, with later launch dates, to follow up on the successful launch, and MIPS is, as always, a part of our toolbox for increased safety that will not be overlooked.
