I have a creak every time I stand up on my pedals. It is not specific to a down stroke on either side and I don't think it's chain related. Any advice on tracking it down?

| could also be a loose bottom bracket, headset, or stem bolts (you torque the handlebars more when standing). |

| I got it! lubed every bolt on the bike! I am pretty sure it was the BB though. Lubed and tightened those as well. |

Wow, I've noticed the same thing about 2 rides ago. My bike is 3 weeks old and carbon fiber, so I was worried that the carbon is damaged somewhere  . It would actually make 2 or 3 quick cracks as soon as I'd pedal standing up. |

If your sure it's coming from around the BB, let me ask you this, What kind of pedals? how old are the cleats? Do you use orthopedic inserts? What kind of wheels? Is the left crank arm installed to spec? Try a flat non clipless pedal to see if the creaks go away, check your cleats, if they're not worn a little grease between the base of the shoe and the cleat helps (esp if they are carbon). I kid you not, I have put baby powder on aftermarket shoe inserts to get rid of a creaky bike. Try a different Rear wheel, if it's your wheel it could just need a little adjustment (look for side to side play in the axle) Is the spoke tension a little soft? if so, try a half turn on the drive side and a quarter turn on the non drive. Sometime a little tri flow on each nip helps with the noise too. If you have already reinstalled the BB or installed a new one, remove the left arm and grease the crank bolt and and any metal on metal contact. If after all that and your bike still creaks, take it to your friendly neighborhood bike shop and let the monkeys figure it out, 99% of the time it can be diagnosed in one test ride by a competent mechanic.

| I believe it's in the crank hub. Everything is brand new on it. I was scared it was the carbon being damaged somewhere, but I've heard this noise before on a steel bike. |

| I like the post from trouble. It is rarely, rarely the BB. It is so difficult for a BB to loosen and/or creak, and so much easier for many other parts around the BB to creak (pedals, crank arm, etc.). |

If you read enough stories of creaks you hear one repeating theme. Many, many different creaks from all over the bike are heard through the BB. If you hear it there, then you have narrowed the source to your bike. Trouble's list is a good start. So are Ben (edit: the ben who posted early in this thread years ago, not me) and ms'.

| Creaks: If you have the time and inclination, perform the following operation. Take a handful of small bearings (loose), add a small amount of grease, remove end cap from "friend's" handlebar, insert bearings, wait two days while they go insane trying to fix the intermittent rattle. |

you can also fill their bike full of water (tubes, too), or stick a hot dog in the seat tube (stinks to high heaven after a few days) - fun times at the bike shop
we also "acquired" a book of parking tickets from a Police bike repair that was never picked up and wrote tickets to problem customers as they were in the store. Bizarre parking infractions issued by badge #666, we used to howl as they went away mad...at someone else. It was quite a game to keep the rube occupied as the ticket was left under the wiper
those were the days

start from the inside and work your way out, BB and cranks, check your chain ring bolts, then remove, clean and re-grease the threads on your pedals, then check your shoes and cleats.
But as stated before, I have had a creak, and it was some spokes on the rear wheel one time, and skewers on another |
