Vertical crack in the non-drive chainstay. Toasted her last night. She was a good bike. 5+ yrs and ~35k miles, most of them in the dark and in the rain. Not sure what did her in but I have some theories. |

| Look into it, the warranty. When my buddy cracked the top tube on his Lynskey, he sent it in, and they replaced the tube, it was flawless, I imagine the Moots people can do the same with a chainstay, and they would want to find out why it failed also |

I took it to the dealer immediately on Saturday. Should hear more today or tomorrow.
Frame failure is a huge turn-off for me and entirely the reason that I went with Ti. Of course a quick google of any frame manuf. and "crack" reveals the reality of today's bike frames. |

Yeah, that should absolutely be fixable....and hopefully covered under warranty.
Now, if the goal is to justify a new bike purchase to Mrs. CP, don't show her this thread and say "Sorry honey....gotta get a new sled now."  |

from what I have seen, Ti tends to crack in certain areas, mostly the top tube, and one BB. I think it is because they are able to get the tubing very thin. But, you pay more for Ti, and I imagine a "Lifetime" warranty should be in there with the added cost. Still one of the best frame materials out there, that is for sure.

| Yeah today's spare is my summer bike since it's dry out, my other moots. Spare for rainy days until I get the frame back is a bianchi cx, a kludge as a true rain bike should be, zip tied plastic fenders, old ksyriums, and suicide canti brakes whose pads need to be replaced every 2 weeks. |

| I decide on winter road rides based on salt/ no salt, not dry/ wet. I change over to jogging/ trainer after the first salting of the winter and stay off of the roads until the first heavy rain after the last freeze of the end-winter start-spring transition. I have hopes of earlier rides this year since I saw a couple dozen robins hanging out in the front yard this week, but nothing is for sure. |

| Crack is about an inch and half behind the bridge, (so about 3 inches or so behind the weld to the BB, vertical on the inside of the chainstay. The crack is full from bottom to top of the tube so I'm glad it didn't fail catastrophically. I have a pic but it's blurry. Might get another pic tonight. Frame is stripped bare except for one stubborn bolt holding the fender on. I'm going to have to drill out the bolt but didn't have time last night. I have to say, bare frames are scary light and it's a wonder that they don't all get cracks eventually. |

Chinook, I have had chainstays fail there twice, It's really not a big issue. (Both of mine were right side which is far more common I believe.) First time it was my ancient Peugeot UO-8. Rode it as couple of flat miles home with the chainstay waving in the breeze. Second time was my Team Dumpster aka Jessica, another Peugeot, this time the ~$500 ~1989 Reynolds 501 sport model that had been hit hard buy an SUV (judging from the damage height). Fork trashed, TT dented, both chainstays pushed to the right. (I think the whole bike was pushed to the left and the wheels tried to stay put.)
I straightened the chainstays and was surprised how easy it was. After a couple of weeks of riding I noticed a crack like yours on the right side. 2/3s around. Then one on the left side, 1/3. I loved the frame and cared little about it's looks, so I reached into an old box of fiberglass and pulled out some CF unidirectional tape someone gave me. (I used to build fiberglass boats.) I did a wrap around the BB, chainstays and gusset between and back a couple of inches with the CF and wood epoxy I always have. Getting the stiff uni-directional to stay down wasn't happening, so I wrapped the whole thing with strips of inner tube. Epoxy gushed out. And what was left was a very professional looking wrap. And the stiffest 501 Peugeot BB on the planet.
Kid Wok on the old VeloNews forum took a few pictures of that bike and posted them there. I:ll see if I saved any. (Oh, that bike went on to do 8000 miles before I retired it. I trust the BB and chainstay repair completely. Less so the rest of the bike. And once I had Jessica J, its ti replacement, there was no reason to keep riding it.)

| I'll let the folks in Steamboat have a look at it before I try any fiberglass, Ben! The bike I'm riding now is being held together with some jb weld. How many miles do you think you put on that after the repair? |

I knew someone that used duct tape on a lugged touring bike that cracked at the lug. Worked for the rest of the tour. :-)
Shoot, I used duct tape on blown out sidewall once.

That repair was two weeks into me owning the bike. All 8000 miles were on it.

holy f---! I hate dealing with bike shops. It's been sitting in their shop for a week (after I stripped it completely bare) and they are charging me $100 shipping and labor. The original shop folded last fall so this is the new moots dealer. Funny enough, most of the employees at this new shop are from the other shop. It would not surprise me if moots charges some labor for this or wants $$ toward a replacement. But don't know cuz they haven't seen the effin frame yet!!
They have a ton of new bikes on the show floor (and hanging from the ceiling), over 200, I would guess. A lot are 105 equipped Colnagos and a bunch of Norcos for the trails. Expecting a busy spring by the looks of it.

what CK said, the cost on that frame to ship is maybe 30 bucks? And labor? Seriously? The bike is already torn down, labor to wrap some bubble wrap around the fame, pack it in a box you already have, wtf?
If you feel like you are getting the run around, go direct............if it's been sitting for a week, screw that, that is a 15 minute job, are they so busy this Feb. they could not get to it yet?
105 Colnagos, and Norcos....that is funny, you can pick up a 105 Colnago for about 1400.00 bucks right now, the market is full of those things, and the only Norco bikes I have ever seen were in a Motorcycle shop.

Yeah, went in looking for a simple pair of socks so I could go running (had forgotten to pack mine)....piss-poor selection and had to get a pair that were too small.
Everything else kinda looked like schitt, as well.....but a nice selection fo rain gear, I guess.
No one talked to me the whole time I was in there.... |
