swapping brake hoods advice - take off or no?

my shimano dura ace 7900 hoods are worn out and need replacing. does one need to remove the brifter body from the bars to change the rubber or can the new ones be slipped over the front without removal? TIA

don't remove them, it will make it almost impossible to install them that way. I had good luck using a little bit of water on the hoods. some use talcum powder...

you will need a long, thin regular screw driver to help stretch and guide. be gentle easy job, worst part is getting all the little rubber tabs where they need to go. do it once and you will never worry about it again

I removed 7900 hoods and replaced them with a different color of Hudz. Didn't use a thin screw driver as jrt suggests, but that could be worth a try. You can slip them straight over the front as you suggest. My LBS recommended spraying the new hoods with rubbing alcohol to make putting the new ones on easier. I didn't use any, but it would likely have been easier. The thing I watched closely was not to risk tearing the hoods when I was applying pressure (which you WILL have to do). That said, it is a very simple operation and the new hoods will look great.

+1 on the rubbing alcohol. It makes things nice and slick without leaving any residue

I always unbolt the levers from the bars to put new hoods on. I guess it is old habits from when I used to change out 7800 shifters.
