Just announced today to dealers, I gather. New lightweight road bikes that are not race bikes. The top of line model weighs only 13 lbs with Di2 and disc brakes!!
All the bikes have a very subdued color scheme and graphics are almost non-existent. Will work with tires up to 32mm, but comes stock w/ 26mm that measure 28mm on the wheels.
The bikes are designed to be performance lifestyle bikes as opposed to full-on race bikes. |

By "not race bike" you mean a bike that will fit someone with other than a yoga instructors flexibility?
How's the aero aspect? |

I don't think so, Dale. I think they said it was the same geometry as the Tarmac SL7.
As for being aero, they said it was not a design consideration. The frames were not visually remarkable, one way or the other. The seat stays met at the top tube and did not have dropped stays. In my opinion, the frames were a bit plain jane. They needed to do that to get them as light as they did. The top frame weighed 588g!!!

| So with same geometry as Tarmac SL7 and use of existing component groups etc., how is this not something other than a marketing gimmick? Are we getting a lower price point or what else is the consumer supposedly gaining by this? Is a larger tire clearance and maybe some different paint jobs all there's to it? |

Wonder what the price will be. $15K? More??!!
Don't know about you guys, but I'm just now starting to enter the market for a new road steed with disc brakes, but I'm holding out for the new DA and Ultegra. |

The top-of-the-Line “Founder’s Edition” will be $15K.
But the lowest model with Ultegra Di2 and alloy wheels will be ~$5k, which doesn’t seem too bad compared to other bikes on the market today. |

If I need a new steed around 2022 I’ll be looking for sweet deals from LBS on 2020 models.
For next year I should be set still. My Orbea Aqua Ultegra dating from 2008 ish is still going strong and is very light. |

| Yeah, OC....I now have the same approach to my bike gear as I do to my golf stuff. I have no problem riding stuff that is a year or two last their “model” year. Still an upgrade over what I am currently riding. |

| Just got back from doing 40+ miles solo at 18.1mph on my eight year old Masi w/ 11v Chorus, rim brakes, elcheapo carbon wheels. Not seeing the need to upgrade or even the desire. |

I'm still putting in a lot of miles on my 2013 Scott carbon hardtail 29'er with little upgrades or replacement parts. It's been solid.
My reasoning for waiting until the new DA/Ult 12-speed stuff comes out is that I'm essentially changing platforms. Disc brakes require all-new wheels, 12-speed requires all new hubs, disc brakes also require all-new brifters, etc. That's the main reason for not just getting a close-out DA9170 bike. I don't want to invest in all-new wheels only to have the next generation come out that requires all-new wheels AGAIN due to the 12-speed hubs.
That's my logic. Fight me. ha ha ha
Having said that, I sure wish I still have my aluminum Quattro Assi with DA 7800. That thing was so smooth. |

The dinosaur here still loving his 1990 alternative reality state of the art race bike (just minus the sewups). Jessica, which would have been "it" in the days just before carbon fiber. Steel forked stiff ti. (Probably stiffer than anything available back then.
Still want to put on aluminum rim sewups. 32 spoke 3X DT Revs (fix gear so all spokes), 330-400g rims, good tires. (Veloflex on hearsay, G+/G2.0 on clincher experience). With that, the bike will be all there. (Well, all there in race training/club race/replacement wheel mode. Too old to ride the 250g silk/290g rim race wheels! The wheels that fly! I even rode a few of races on 220g matt treads.)
I have been dreaming of a lighter ti road bike. The good bike is a sweet ride and despite not being light at all, is wonderful to climb on because if fits so well, both for contact points and locations and wheel location for secure footing on really steep stuff. I am slowly realizing that all this has a price - long top tube, steep and quick front end, short chainstays, shortish WB, highish BB, not a stiff steerer (1" steel) - all add up to wobbles. Not end of the world, but on cool days and when I am tight or nervous and road surface is poor, over ~42 can be nervous. (I've been loose as a goose and gone close to 50 - no speedo but a huge tailwind! - and the bike did just fine but I was 12 years younger then.
So maybe I want a Merlin type, slightly more traditional geo., lower BB, shorter TT, longer stem, longer WR. less stiff, lighter. Set it up similarly, 9-speed triple. This might happen if I see used "the bike". Or maybe I will have TiCycles make me another if we happen to get into a chat and Dave makes a "gotta have" suggestion.

Ben, you just described my Carl Strong Ti road bike. Stage race geometry, low BB, double butted tubes, classic look, non-sloping TT, threaded BB, Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork, 10v Record, 32/28 spoke Open Pros, minimalistic branding.
Dream ride but not as aero as my Masi carbon. Mostly it sits on my trainer but I break it out occasionally to show the new kids what a bike is supposed to look like. |

So apparently these are in store now and top end model is retailing for $15k CDN. Yikes.
I have told my LBS to expect a call around 2023 for an unsold 2021 model at steep discount. Ideally by light-ish Orbea road bike should still be able to bridge that period. |

Ben, that was my experience when I clipped a dog and wreck my custom steel bike.
"How much?!? I can't authorize that!" ...a month later and after much documentation they did. |
