lsd, I've done so many crashes I need the padded version, Every time I slam my elbow or hip, its bursitis time for months, 18 or so sleeping on foam with holes cut out for the hips. I'm getting far more careful simply because I don't want to go through it again. But good clothes for the job? Not much we can learn from them for cycling, but ice hockey. The standard fare is perfect to learn to skate in, especially if you are learning as an adult. The routine (and the dangerous) falls are no big deal at all!. The trouble with ice hockey is that they collide with each other at bike racing speeds, sometimes going in opposite directions. Plus they have sharpened steel blades, sticks that look like wooden copies of weapons and a puck that can go 120 mph 5' off the ice.
Still, a great sport. (They just should hand out real penalties and fines for fighting. (And show goalies making great saves, not just getting scored on. Says an ex-goalie.)
and edit: that bulky, strange outfits those hockey players wear are amazing for just how little it slows them down. Despite wearing a full locker of gear, you can slate like a figure skater (if they gave you the right skate).
