Bike packing is not my thing as previously reported, but four/ five/ six hour gravel rides are kind of fun. Mellow pace, exploring some back roads, getting lost... all part of the fun.

Unlike a road ride where you can find a convenience store every few miles to grab something to eat, gravel roads aren't as cursed so you end up taking a bunch of stuff to eat and drink. On top of that this time of year the temperature throughout the day might go up or down quite a bit so there's the various clothing and layers to deal with.

Some of the guys I ride with look like they're in the middle of a move with all the bags even if they don't have much in them. I hate that look. Handlebar bags that are enormous, seat packs that look like a basketball hanging down and swaying like a drunk sailor, frame bags that kill the look of a nice frame.

The trend in gravel bike handlebars are these super wide things that reming me of Peter Fonda in Easy Rider. I like my 40cm FSA Compact Pro bars and there's not a lot of real estate to hang some monster bag off the front even if I wanted.

Anyway, I found two things that are the cats pajamas as far as I'm concerned. https://www.revelatedesigns.com/index.cfm/store.catalog/seat-bags/Shrew

Loads of room for a jacket and a bunch of other stuff, and when it's empty it mushes up to a small size.

The other is a handlebar bag 4" diameter and 7" long. Easily fits my bars, enough room to stash some food, phone, cash, some gels, and whatever without messing up the cables or the shifter/ brake action.
The brand is Bueno Bags. Made right here in Springfield, MO
I can't find a website but they show up on Facebook.

Haven't spent many hours with them but so far both get an A.

Enough room for the gear needed on a nice long gravel ride but not so much that you look overloaded or get tempted to pack more stuff than necessary.

Anyway, have fun this weekend. I'm off to race CX in Arkansas.
75 degrees (24 OC degrees) today and yesterday, I think we broke the record both days
That's just not right

All hail light weight stiff and strong rear racks. You can add or subtract carrying capacity as needed and doesn't mess with the front end. Works for me.

I just ordered an Arundel Czar HB bag. Fairly rigid looking near cylinder. 120 cubic inches. Maybe 9 or 10 inches wide. I bought it to see if weight on the HBs will help the geared TiCycles with speed wobbles.

I talked to Dave Levy re: the wobble that is getting worse clearly because I am aging and not riding as aggressively as I used to. Dave said he's having the same issue with his personal bike! Said that basically all the design decisions I/we made added up to speed wobble. If the weighted bag works, I'll get a high quality front rack. Seat bag contents go forward and seat is free for sewups! (If no, another TiCycles, as close to the current for fit and feel, lower BB (I've slowed and don't need as much pedal clearance

I basically don't like HB bags, but boy, are they cheaper than frames! If this helps, I won't mind spending the bucks to try a few.

That’s about the size of my handlebar bag. Generic MEC brand 25 bucks nothing fancy. Fits two sandwiches an extra water bottle (or sometimes a can of beer), and some minor repair materials. Nothing more. Perfect.

For the really long rides I bring extra spare stuff and yet another water bottle. With that comes a small 2L frame bag option.

No saddle bags or otherwise for me. Fugly and reduced stability. The handle bar bag option has style. Ask Marianne Vos. Her bikes have one on all her training rides. Road and off-road.

I think there are photos out there that could be dredged up if necessary.

Might be fanny packs... I'll need to check

That excuse has a very familiar ring to it.

So, is this the first of the new monthly VeloNation column; "Product reviews by Dale"?

I like. I come here anyway and this saves me spending hours wading through those other websites.

I’d be curious to know what commission Dale is getting from the massive sales his reviews are generating.

I’ve heard of people biting down on handlebars but CK inhaling handlebar bag is a new one. The contained sandwich must have smelled especially nice. Or perhaps it was inhaling of the patchkit glue?
