I don't want to spend the money on a bike computer, don't need all that information...BUT I do want to mount my phone on my stem/bars and use it for GPS as we are hoping to finally make it to Europe for a cycling trip this Spring.
If I'm only using it for GPS, do I download Komoot, ot just save my own maps to the phone?
What's the easiest way, and one which will drain the battery the least?

Do you want turn by turn or just stare at a map? For the latter I’ve been using ridewithgps for years (the free version), it’s brilliant in terms of cycling specific map layer options. Turn by turn can be added for paid version. Can’t speak how it compares to Komoot as I don’t know it. Also mostly using ridewithgps for remote gravel riding not dense urban settings.
Loaned a Garmin for riding out of Paris in November. The route was a maze but never missed a turn. We’ve since bought one since my wife wanted one anyway as she tends to get lost a few blocks from our house lol. |

Gaia earth also is very good.
One little tidbit about iphones, which may or may not apply for anyone reading: The past few generations have cameras with fragile optical image stabilization that can be permanently disabled by too much vibration. This definitely is an issue with motorcycles - and probably does not apply to bicycles, but just sharing in case it might. . .
Lastly, regarding options to mount a phone/gps on a 2 wheeler, ram mounts are a good place to look. You won't need their mid or most robust stuff on a bicycle. |
