I have a 2007 Cervelo SLC-SL. Just looked at the S3 (the modern equivalent) - wow, have the prices dropped! With so many bikes getting more expensive, any thoughts on why these would be dropping so significantly? I was very surprised.

I can only speculate, but I think part of it is the new owners and a desire to be a bit more competitive in the retail market. The competiion has closed the gap to Cervelo in amny areas (tri bikes and aero road, most notably) and competition breeds better pricing usually.

CK, I thought of that as a reason, too. They had tons of cache several years ago, but now seem to be high value among the Triathlete crowd but perhaps less among the roadies. I really like the SLC-SL and think the new pricing for a new S3 frameset is actually a steal at that price. As a consumer, we're so conditioned to watch prices rise and seeing a drop made me wonder and become a little wary at the same time. Odd reaction.

I'd love to say it was because the tooling molds were paid off, etc. but since they are all new designs for the S2/3 bikes, it can't be that (same with the P2/3 tri bikes).

I love my S2.....light, comfy and aero.

been shopping for bikes recently and OTS carbon bikes are quite cheap compared to ti. $3k for full mech ultegra builds on road frames seems fairly common. though typically the stock wheelsets are junk. di2 builds are another story.

the ti bike I just ordered is like buying a fully built carbon bike and then adding in the frame too. oh well.

Chinook. the costs of ti bikes, materials and work, are high and always will be. Gains from mass production are not going to be large. CF lends itself to large productions and once tooling overhead is paid off, additional frames are straight profit (which could be set aside to prepay the next batch of tooling).

The price to be paid for sloppy workmanship is also different. Poor levels of cleanliness on ti welds and it is a very good bet they will fail. Poor quality fabric lay-up in CF? Odds are excellent that no one will ever know.

Ben, I realize that and that's why I pulled the trigger on the ti. Still, I was surprised to see cf bikes fully built with ultegra so "low" in price since the buyer's guide rags this year were quoting significantly higher. Maybe it's a February thing too and prices will climb in April. Anyway, at least I know one bike shop that will make the bank in March.

Chinook,

Welcome to the ti world. I got mine back in January but since I live in VT I haven't been aboe to ride it yet. We're in a cold spell right now, very chilly for this time of year. Hoping for spring to roar out of the blocks by the end of March.

Hey, Ben, do we get shown some secret handshake to use when we meet other ti riders?

prolly due to a huge stock of carbon bikes from every manufacturer out there, tons on the internet, a new Merckx frame and fork can be had for 499.00
High quality carbon is still holding good pricing out there, Ciocc, Cinelli, etc.....I had always thought Cervelo's were WAY overpriced, always wanted one until I worked on some at the shop. Just completed a fillet brazed custom steel Casati build, 60cm frame for a customer, wow that bike was sweet, and came in just over 16lbs, and rode 100 times better than a carbon bike, and it was not hugely expensive
