I would like to comment on your use of the term "twats". Although it is a cute vowel change from "twits", it is an unfortunate choice of words. I do not object to its vulgarity or the the disrespect shown to twits. My concern: It is disrespectful to women to use a slang term for a part of their bodies as a disparagement for completely unrelated actions.

I still prefer the term. Never had a problem with the population using the term 'dicks' in reference to a personality trait unrelated to my penis.

Back on topic: the official race radio alert was "Attention: A communication to directeur sportives. The management of the organisation have planned to put ahead of the head of the riders, depending on the situation, of course, after the top, to place in front of various groups an organisation moto with a red flag. All to avoid having attacks on the descent and after this to ensure that the riders remain in their positions and to prevent taking big risks and, for all, to remain in this position until the security agents lower the red flag.”

The tweet was "Stelvio descent neutralised due to snow.”

All any DS had to do was stay off twitter from the starting flag to the finish. Really not hard. Sounds like the other teams want to give Quintana a time penalty for not following Twitter! (Keith, we need you picture!)

I don't recall any riders saying they saw a red flag. No flag? Race is still on. Isn't that how it works? Kinda like Keirin racing. You can't pass the pace derny. But you can fight to be right behind it. You don't stop for a wardrobe break!

I'm guessing Quintana will be penalized. But that really isn't right. All he did was race. Follow Rolland over the hilltop, then ultimately catch and pass him. If he saw no moto with flag in front of him, what was he supposed to do? And as for the riders behind? What were they stopping for? At least you roll over the top and see if there's a moto ahead. And any DS who ordered his rider to stop based on Twitter? He should be docked the difference between his riders' winnings and what they potentially could have won.

And we could start another thread on race radios!

Of course no one saw a red flag. No one ever hears a referee whistle either. LOL. "Huh what, I was offside? No way!"

A good ref cuts through the crap and tells that player where to go. Unfortunately officiating is not cycling's strong suit. Want to see top notch officiating in the face of tremendous pressure, watch a rerun of last weekend's Champions League final.

The message seemed relatively clear in my reading. Riders in whatever group they were in for the descent stay behind the moto with the red flag leading them down. Full racing at the drop of the flag. If that isn't a neutralized race, what is? Pass the flag up moto and you get a penalty.

If the DS in the car was confused by this, why would they not simply seek clarification from the organizers? Or did they ask and get no appropriate response?

I read the Velonews article which quotes a moto driver/passenger as saying they did have a red flag and Quintana urged them on and eventually passed the moto. Next question, did Quintana actually hear the order to not pass the moto. He says his radio was cutting in and out, what with the water.

Ive passed a pace car racing. Someone has got to give me a very good and clear reason not to if I'm in front and the Giro is at stake.

If the standing rule is not to pass a red flag, what (or twat) difference does it make if the radio was working?

smokey, holding a rider to a rule that wasn't in place when the race started but was instead made on the fly is not quality officiating. Perhaps you can adjust Quintana's time to the time he gained on the moto, but he should not be penalized any time made by the peloton stopping. That was their choice. And any who got an order to stop from their DS, well see my post above.
