Well, you have to remember that Lemond had been out of the game since '94.....and although EPO was pretty rampant by that point, it seems he may have been fairly isolated from it. Legeay has never been known as a DS with doping policies (exact opposite according to some) and GL was never known for being exceptionally close with his teammates, IIRC.

And I think when Lemond was finally out of the sport, he looked at the most likely reasons first....after-effects of his gunshot wounds, etc. At the time., I don't think anyone (outside of the sport) really realized how widespread it was......to be honest, I am still completely shocked by it (and my own naivete).

LeMond was clean, to suggest otherwise brings back the dark days of -7 paying interns to troll and stir up doubt

At the time, there was no platform and the UCI certainly didn't want any part of that particular conversation -you would be painted as having a tin foil hat. Read Inga Thomson's recent interview, she explains it pretty well. It took Floyd of all people to finally bust down the wall.

CK, another point regarding Lemond and his decline in the peloton - that was before the ubiquitous power meter. So side-by-side comparisons were most of what Lemond had to work with. Are others going faster or am I slowing down? Has power meters been universal, Lemond wold have known very quickly the people were now riding at impossible levels.

ben, IIRC, GL was one of the earliest adopters of power meters, working with SRM. Don't remember exactly when it was, but want to say 92 or so. I seem to remember him talking about hitting good power numbers in his training, but chalked up his decline to recovery (or lack thereof).

Which would make sense since one fo the greatest benefits of EPO is being able to recover faster and better endure the stresses of training blocks / stage races.

But to your point, their use was not ubiquitous and he was only comparing his numbers against himself.
