A buddy and I were having this discussion , if you could go back in time and could take today's technology with you, how far back in time , could be never , would you have to go to be a competitive pro cyclist ?

I was thinking, back in the days of Alfonsina Strada (who rode the Giro in 1924) :^) But how would today's bikes fare on the roads of yesteryear? I doubt they could handle the dirt, gravel, and mud, not to mention that riders in those days had to maintain their bikes themselves. So I think Alfonsina Strada would still beat me on her sturdy single-speed bike with wide, tough tires...and handlebars fashioned from the broomstick she appropriated from a bystander when her handlebars snapped during one stage. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/100-tours-100-tales/2014/may/12/alfonsina-strada-giro-italia-woman-grand-tour

Pick the right technology. a Road racing CX framed bike for bigger tires. bring the right drugs and I might have raced against penny farthings. As much as technology does make it all easier faster and smoother it is the Engine and mine has never been a pro level engine. Now maybe if I went back to 10 years old and started riding, improving my nutrition, playing more sports?

For me I had to say the 1870s when they had those bike wheel bikes. I figured if nothing else I could take them in the corners. I still don't know how they road those things.
