Yep, re Rominger and Boardman - Disc wheels, shoe covers and tight clothes, aero helmets, body positioning - they did all of that.

On Wiggo, I find his attitude totally fine. May not speak to me, but it doesn't bother me one bit. Cycling is full of boring endurance athletes - train hard, sleep well, etc. To have an eccentric and arrogant personality is good for the sport imho. Hinault was no robot either.

On a side note, my 11 year old daughter watched Slaying the Badger with me and her assessment of Hinault was - I don't think he's a bad man like they are saying, I just think he is "winning motivated." Damn straight that guy wanted to win, and Wiggo does too. He's just a bit of a character.

I don't remember Ullrich using a larger rear wheel TT bike....I know Moser did when he set the record in 84.

As for Rominger, no doubt he threw down a big number, but I get why it doesn't count now.....if the equipment was outside the current rules, it can't be a legal attempt. Would have been very interesting to see what the UCI would have done had he ridden with two 700c wheels. Added bonus of their decision is that it avoided any sticky issues re: doping.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

agreed - Rominger was an early part of the lost generation for sure.

If it was boxing, hockey or any other sport this kind of talk would be met with thumbs up.

His hour record attempt sold out in 7mins; he's got rock star appeal and talk to match.

Wiggo's alright.

And the ego to match. Can't argue with a lot of his results and I can respect those results. I have a more difficult time respecting the "it's all about me" attitude, which top-tier athletes in most sports exhibit. Don't care much for it in cycling or anywhere else. My high-school aged son plays football. I have always told him from pee-wee ball to the present to let his play on the field do the talking instead of his mouth. A little bragging is OK, but really, show some respect to the other athletes who also train very hard.

I hear you but as you say it comes with territory of top level sport. So in judging these guys I tend to look beyond the spotlight and assess how they are in real life. Wiggo's a family man who has his priorities straight so he's alright in my book. Same with that other braggy brit Cav.

I can't stand Tiger's smirk; he may be quiet but his actions off the field have spoken loudly and told me he deserves zero respect.

You make a good point about how Wiggins goes about his personal life.  How good of a husband/father he is trumps how well he rides IMO.

Still, I have yet to see a prima donna athlete that doesn't rub me the wrong way a little bit.  Just a personal thing, I guess...
