After one crashed right behind a skier in a race, narrowly missing him. So much for them being an alternative to motos. |

Can, and still, be a viable alternative....but proper rules need to be put in place. No flyingn directly overhead of racers, spectators, etc.
Like all new technologies, there will be a learning curve. FIS is completely overreacting, IMO.

Context: consider the damage overaggressive moto drivers have done just this year.

+1 Keep the drones a minimum height above the riders. Sport is inherently dangerous and all involved accept some level of risk. If proper & reasonable guidelenes are established and adhered to, shouldn't be a problem. |

FIS has those rules and they were initially followed. As with motos, there's rules and then there's getting spectacular images.
Using drones also is that much harder in a bike race, conflicts w helis, trees, etc.
I am thinking the on board camera route is the better one. Technology is getting better and smaller all the time. |

Wouldn't racing be safer with a helicopter drone "parked" permanently about 25 feet in front of Chris Froome, relaying the video image back to his computer?
Yes, there would be occasional problems. But the alternative isn't so pretty either.

| The best wound be cameras mounted on bikes and helmets, assuming they can get light enough. Then only riders would hit each other. |

Perhaps a good drone roll would be like a camera on a tower. Go up when the riders come by, then drop back down. And not directly over the riders.
Rather than trying to buzz along behind. |

To me drones vs motos is just replacing one risk with another. We already have helis providing overhead shots so if you keep drones high up and away they add zip cause the heli will have a far better camera. The only way drones would add is up close and personal.
BTW that ski incident was a "controlled crash" after the drone developed issues (remote control interference). |

I would rather be hit by a drone than a moto.........just sayin........
some guys filmed a video for bike to work week here a couple of years ago, they had a drone follow me through the mountains, it was high enough that getting hit was not a worry, and going over trees was very easy for them, but I imagine it is more about the pilot, than the drone.... |
