More corrupt UCI stuff in the news

Conjecture here. UCI is big on their tablets and down on heat sensors. Typhon and USI are in bed together. Maybe Typhon has a motor that can slip past the UCI tablets, but not a heat sensor. (Being just a not so smart engineer, it smells fishy to me that an instrument that detects exactly what you are looking for (generated heat, the given end result of power generation) somehow "doesn't work" in UCI's eyes.
And, a piece I find almost hilarious. US Cycling, that organization that has been in bed with US Postal/Discovery, Amgen and a host of shady characters is now touting using heat sensors for mechanical doping. Meaning that the pro ranks better be careful what bikes they send to the US! It would cause all kinds of issues if a UCI approved bike got scanned and bagged at the Tour of California!
A projection (that may have been thwarted by that d***ed French TV station  ) - if UCI goes ahead with its tablets, they will put in place wording that other country's organization must use the same tablets in interests of uniformity in the sport. (You saw it here first.)
A longer term move UCI needs to make to protect their image and greatness; some way of barring French police and media from UCI events. (The joke/problem/arrogance here is UCI thinking the Tour de France is a UCI event. Getting the Tour on board with banning French media?)
Funny how the UCI purports to be all about cleaning up the sport, but the two organizations that have been driving forces are their enemy. The French gendarmes - Festina and French media - LA, mechanical doping ...
My French isn't very good, but doesn't UCI stand for something like Uniformitie Corrupte Institute translating to The Institute for the Uniformity of Corruption. Can you French scholars correct my spelling?

Ben - IMO the UCI is factually correct on the technology argument. While heat sensors are theoretically superior, the technology is premised on catching use of motors in the act, in real time, in a moving peloton with a lot of other heat signals complicating detection. The EM technology doesn't have all these drawbacks, the main question on those is whether the detectors are sensitive enough. Ideally both should be used.
But nothing will help if there's corruption as the news headings would tend to suggest. |

I'm surprised no one has thought of the obvious answer. Cut the bikes in half at the start line, if they have a motor it will be obvious and the rider should be banned.
If there's no motor then they can race as per usual.

Speaking of ducks and weight. So, the riders have to get their sawed in half bike intact to race at the starting line? Sounds like a job for a lot of duck tape. Can they ride lighter bikes, citing the added weight as part of the bike as raced?
Will we start seeing 12 lb bikes at the LBS, cut in half and taped just like the pros? Next into the bike market - 3M with its "Peloton" brand tape; lighter, stiffer and faster (to apply).

The magnetic field detectors can sense the presence of mechanical systems whether they are active or dormant. FLIR cameras can only see heat signatures which demands the motor is being used to find it. Yes you can get sensitivity on thermal cameras to detect the heat in the chain or BB bearings. that just results in false positives so any heat cameral must be calibrated to detect the right heat signature. the magnetic detectors are much simpler and no metal can hide from them. A FLIR camera is pretty expensive especially compared to magnetic field detectors by a factor of 8 to 20. USA cycling used heat cameras and they are only of use if you guess the right moment a motor might be used. The tablets can be used at the start and finish and it does not matter if the system was even used on the bikes, it can identify the motors and batteries.
Magnetic detectors are so good they can identify a metal piece say from a BBQ brush in a bottle wash line at a brewery as the bottles go by thousands of bottles an hour. Most of the criticism I read over the technology is written by lay persons or some who have only seen a heat camera and can't even tell you what uses metal detectors have besides searching the beach for lost rolexes.. Now competence and motivation by the UCI? I know a lot of the commissaires and technical people who I think are honest and well motivated but you need to understand too that they are from all walks of life as commissaires are generally a regular cross section of the professions. some are doctors including MDs. some are lawyers, some are cops, I was an electrician and electrical inspector. I have a friend who is a helicopter mechanic. Several tax accountants, public administrators. A few Cycle moms and dads but not too many of those much past the national level.
The tablets work and work very well especially for the $$. A heat camera might be of use on the road but not so much in the pits.
