The effort was only part of story. VDPs one hour red zone power output is obviously unmatched by road racers. Props to CX racing. You could tell though being a bigger guy he certainly wasn't among the best on steep hills.

The other part of story is that lead two effed this one up royally. Yet another factor was the nicely spaced mini chase groups that kept providing visual targets.

But yeah seeing VDP tow that seven some for several kms and then seamlessly dominate the sprint is something exceedingly rare.

Alaphilippe is going to rue this a long time. I think he had better than 50-50 of beating Fugsland even if he towed him much of the way and even if he couldn't, finishing in full view in second place is a lot better than fourth two seconds back and being just an afterthought.

There is a certain irony in Fulgsang still making the podium....

On the other end of the spectrum, something is clearly amiss with Sagan. I had thought they just mis-judged the timing for his peak form, but was expecting him to come good for this week of racing. Instead, he abandoned yesterday.

Still not ruling him out for Sunday in Liege, but....

I think PR was a better indicator of his form (close but not quite) than AGR. There's few that line up for both give how exhausting PR is. Main reason why VDP didn't race it. Van Avermaet didn't factor either yesterday. The withdrawal was largely precautionary.

The bigger question is whether he should have switched focus as he's done this year. I have a hard time seeing him be competitive at LBL even in top shape.

No, not really....main reason he didn't race it was because his team wasn't invited.

They were verbally invited but the invite was not formalized when team made it clear they would be lining up without VDP. The main goal was always Amstel and PR was sacrificed for it. That bit of behind the scene back and forth has been missed by most media except Nieuwsblad, https://cyclingpro.net/velopro/course/paris-roubaix/mathieu-van-der-poel-pas-frustre-de-rater-paris-roubaix/

Btw grandpa Poulidor didn't get that decision to skip PR and made his unhappiness very clear. Maybe he's the one who initially pushed ASO to extend the invite LOL. The other part that may be getting missed by English media is on VDPs future. The real question here is when Corderon will become a world tour team. There's lots of money and ambition there.
