The sand! Holy heck... 500+ meters of that stuff is going to be brutal. I don't know if it's the same consistency as in Mol but that stuff was fluffy as can be. There's going to be a lot of running.

I'll get in several hours on the trainer this weekend watching.

MVDP seemed to be riding pretty close to water line but yes it’s pretty rutty and requires power. The track you create is not there next lap so it doesn’t get easier. Conversely the horse track part sounds fast.

Will miss it 100%. Over by the time I wake up. Btw figured you’d be doing ballet while watching.

You need a wakeup call?

oops, 4:00am Pacific. Sleep in, you can read the race review after breakfast.
Ballet... nice. My mid-ride snack will be a big bowl of borsch.

I might still be on a sleeping schedule that works! Just got that boot in the groin. (Yes, but all good. A casing boot. Mesh for my second hernia. To keep that all important tube in place!) They want me walking every 2 hours so I've been sleeping "watches". Sleep the 2 to 4 watch, watch the worlds, got back to sleep. (Sunday's ride day but not for a month or so. 2 weeks before I even consider the trainer.

I had a hernia op last October....was never an issue, but with my deductible paid adn not wanting to potentially compromise The Rift in July, I got it done this year. Best thing I have ever done....first two days were pretty bad, but bounced back fairly quickly after that. Heal fat, Ben!

The course is BRUTAL!! Sounds like high tide could impact where the pros can ride on the beach on race day.

CK, modern medicine has changed! I had a mesh put in on the other side (inguinal, this time femoral) 20 years ago. That went well and recovery was straightforward but his time it was actually fun! No pain at all except the burning in my arm from the anesthesia. (And funny, the nurse said "He rides a fix gear. He can take it!")

Waits were short. I was comfortable the whole time (and warm - hospital experiences for me have always been under-dressed in that half dress and thin blanket. (Nice when it's freshly warm but not an hour later.) Got told yesterday they now know infections are fewer with warm patients. So; same dress but a tube blowing warm air under it. Shades of Marilyn Monroe! And very comfortable. Up there with my new down comforter. The drugs are better. Nothing 'till I got to surgery, then I was out in like a minute. Wake-up was quick and clean. I did spend the day on lowered intelligence. Just took it in stride as a fun visit to many years ago. I took no pain killers at all last night and have had zero since the surgery. Yeah I feel it, but max is maybe a low 2.

I had good entertainment the whole time. (Last time I was parked for a long hour on the gurney, strapped down, not warm, unable to turn my head and feet away from the heavy traffic on the corridor that I could not see. Finally my surgery nurse noticed I was fully "with it" since I had opted out of pre-anesthesia medication, moved me so I could see and came by when she could.)

So, this brings up a disturbing question: are the new bikes as nice as the new medicine? (Don't answer that! It would cost me more than the bill I've got coming.)

Edit: an amusing insight late yesterday - the three small incisions;a bicycle tire repair only now it is a boot in the groin!  Mesh=boot.  Now we bike people install those boots with the tire out n the open.  She (my doc) did it from the inside.  So, she had to first blow me up with CO2.  Incision #1.  Then insert light and camera.  Incision number #2 - wiring going to the GPS unit on the handlebars.  Incision #3 to insert tools.  I'm guessing she rides a threadless stem and simply unbolts the bars and sets them across my thighs so she had the GPS close as she worked.

Read the CyclingNews article on Katie Compton who is hanging up her Belgian cleats after tomorrow to race one last season here. Then scanned the starting lists of the Elites (both). She's the oldest by 5 years of the 93 starters.

I watched her first two Nationals wins here in Portland. Had no idea who she was first time. Later learned she pulled that off starting mid-field with no UCI points because riding those races would disqualify her for the Para-Olympics. (She rode local races against the men.) Followed her since. She's had her challenges. Health, some poor decisions. But what a trooper. I hope she can put in a race she's proud of.

A few years ago my teammates and I crammed ourselves into a double room at the Super 8 in Iowa City for Jingle Cross. KFC was staying at the same hotel. Sort of a sad commentary as to the state of pro cycling, at least for the women 'crossers, that the multi-year US champ is staying in a $65 a night crummy hotel.

Clara did well for USA, just off podium. Compton can retire knowing there’s an heir. Basing on ladies podium I think it will be van Aert tomorrow. Not even close to waking up in time, tired from long ride yesterday.

Have had two hernia mesh surgeries. One four or five years ago. The last a couple years ago. Spent a year delivering mail with a double hernia truss. I spent almost a year laying back in my mail truck every day pushing back my guts. Could stick my finger in the tear. Both went well but have always been tender when touched or poked in groin area.

I had hernia mesh surgery Jan 2018. Hernia was no problem for a couple of years until I was the size of a golf ball and it started to bother me. Never bothered me when I rode my bike. Surgery was a piece of cake. They put me completely out. I asked the Doctor when I could get back on my bike. He said "let pain be your guide". I think I was back on my bike within a week or so.

I woke myself up this morning and decided to make the trip to big screen.

Descent action but without Wouts flat it would have been better. I think MVDP would have made catch later in race maybe around lap 5. Anyway. The ability of MVDP to clip back in on steep ramp after he briefly came undone in itself was worthy of gold.
