I wonder how much start money he received during his career?

Not surprised that the transition of the rant missed the most important angle. Also the topic was broached by Wuyts, Nys just confirmed it. And the topic is already done in Belgium.

Well, that was different...that benefitted him.

I'm kinda surprised though that Toon Aerts and Van de Haar aren't getting start money, though....
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

No surprise at all. The Wout Matje battle draws in 1000s of extra spectators; the start money almost pays for itself. Aerts, van de Haar etc don't get close to approximating that draw. Aerts doesn't care "Coldplay also gets more money than (insert your favorite Belgian bar band here)". The bigger topic missed by Velonews is the resentment towards UCI WC circuit being able to offer the start money and attracted the big names, which puts pressure on other races that are closer to Belgian hearts.

If you want to understand what else Nys, Wuyts etc. are mad about, you can run this through google translate:

https://www.wielerflits.nl/nieuws/sven-nys-hekelt-wereldbeker-niet-fair-dat-van-aert-en-van-der-poel-betaald-worden/

It comes down to high cost for spectators at WC races, the number of WC races (putting pressure on other organizers such as X2O and SuperPrestige) and Flanders Classics as the new big dog responsible for organizing a number of WC races and offering start money to VDP and van Aert. Nys has no objection to notion of start money in itself. Basically what were seeing is a Flanders Classics powerplay (they of course also organize a number of spring classics and are positioning themselves in a similar way as ASO as a major player in cycling).

In my mind the powerplay may actually be a good thing as leverage that Flanders Classics has creates continuity and new opportunities in the sport. For example, they do a really bang on job with coverage of womens' races. Much better than most other organizers. Part of inevitable modernization of cycling structures perhaps.
