High speed crash into the back of a bus while training in Columbia. Early reports point to possible career ending injuries to neck, chest, lower leg, multiple hours of surgery. Not unlike Froome's crash. Yikes.

Did you see the pics of the bus!?! He freakin' dented that beast.

Couple other famous wrecks-
Davis Phinney at L-B-L 1988

I saw a photo of back with dent but couldn't make out if that was shape of rear of bus to begin with or if he dented it. Maybe not same photo. Someone reported the Ineos boys may have been drafting the bus. Sounds like a splendid idea (if true) seeing that at least one of them was on a TT bike.

Who was the Belgian racer that disappeared through the rear window of a car? Vanderaerden or someone else? Or was that Phinney?

I was thinking Gerrie Knetemann, 1983, Dwars door Belgie, third photo in link below (with additional smaller photos one can click on immediately underneath it). Warning, that's a lot of blood.

The irony of that whole incident is that ISoGlass is a manufacturer of safety glass, but the rear window did not have it.

Warning, that's a lot of blood.

When they're going full gas and the HR is sky high it's no wonder the blood explodes out when they get cut.

I remember Thor Hushovd getting his arm slashed by one of those stupid green PMU corrugated plastic hands that a spectator had leaned out into the lane.
Same deal, it looked like crime scene.

Sounds like he was in fact riding his TT bike and failed to notice in time that bus stopped to drop off a passenger. TT bikes on open roads are a bad idea, period.

After an explanation of this technical language from a medical specialist in this field, I understand that we no longer talk about cycling. Everything that happens in the next few hours will be ensuring Egan Bernal's quality of life after this accident”

Major spinal surgery but it sounds like it was successful.

Woke up this morning to read that he'd already had spinal surgery in addition to procedures for his broken femur and knee among other things. The dent at the the rear of the bus is massive so the little guy must have been hauling ass.

Gutted to see this. He's one tough cookie and I've always enjoyed watching him race. Our thoughts should be with him and his family as we can only hope he recovers enough to lead a normal life. Pro cycling is probably not going to be reality, I'm afraid.

Quick story, I was warming up for a criterium in downtown Raleigh back in 2006 when I realized I only had a few minutes to get to the start line. I'm flying down some empty streets towards the course when I enter an intersection (no stoplights) and broadside a car at full speed. Apparently I was going the wrong direction on a one-way street!! Good reason why there weren't any stoplights that I could see. I landed on my tailbone in the middle of a busy intersection. Should have seen the damage I did to the car.

That is just plain fugly. Here is to hoping that at minimum he can live a normal life if pro cycling is no longer an option for him.

He’s since undergone three surgeries, and will remain in the ICU for 72 hours, with one doctor speaking on Colombian TV adding, “If he’s back on the bike within a year it will be a miracle.”

Not unexpected, but damn....

Sounds like Bernal is lucid and can move arms and legs. Good signs for recovery, at least back to a normal life.

Amy Pieters isn't doing nearly as well. Read this morning she is still in a coma and significant brain trauma has been diagnosed. Ugh.
