The mechanic at Intermarché-Circus-Wanty saved what, two grams running single chainring nuts instead of doubles?  And neglected to tell Rui Costa he'd better start on the small chainring!

I was wondering what colossal "oops" happened that the crankset fell apart under a good but not all-powerful rider.  I'm disappointed.  "Oops"+, yes but a really simple one we could have done just as easily 50 years ago.

They didn't do it as a weight savings, it was a mistake made when assembling the cranks. Rotor was able to identify the problem after the team mechanics grabbed the parts from the start ramp after the crash.

Props to Rotor for getting out in front of this as quickly as possible and identifying the issue.

I blame 1x drive trains for giving the mechanic options to pick the wrong nuts.

Sucks for Costa, I think he injured his knee as a result? Abandoned Romandie next day.

CK, I was hardly serious about the weight savings.  Guess I needed a smiley.

I've done the opposite.  Killed cranksets using double bolts and just one chainring.  Perfectly safe.  But when you take the worn out ring off, you find the bolt holes are elongated big time.
