it would be good for a rider to win something notable in his career, so that at the very least when he opens a bike shop or pub in the hometown he'll have a jersey or a trophy or two to display.

Yes the top dogs make good salary but for Joe Average pro cyclist the kermiskoersen are still an important part of the annual income equation. There was an interesting article yesterday (in dutch of course) as to why these guys would go straight from 3 weeks of gruelling riding to these circus events. Money for most.

OC no question. I hear the appearance money for the post-Tour criterium circuit is well worth the trouble. Interestingly enough, the Lantern Rouge is highly coveted for exactly this reason. Infamous is better than almost famous.

What is the tax rate in France ? Mickelson didn't take home 1.4M US For his two weeks of play, the world’s best golfer (rankings be damned) earned £1,445,000, or about $2,167,500. The United Kingdom, which has authority to set Scotland’s tax rate until 2016, graduates to a 40% tax rate when income hits £32,010 then 45% when it reaches £150,000. Mickelson will pay £636,069 ($954,000, or 44.02%) on his Scottish earnings. But that’s not all. The UK will tax a portion of his endorsement income for the two weeks he was in Scotland. It will also tax any bonuses he receives for winning these tournaments as well as a portion of the ranking bonuses he will receive at the end of the year, all at 45%.
