Evelyn Stevens missed the women's world's TT bronze by 0.04 seconds. Jeez, how accurate are the measurements? This may be within the margin of error. How small a time gap is insignificant? At some point, it's equivalent to a coin toss. Maybe gaps of less than say 0.1 seconds are statistical ties, and it would be more fair to award two bronze medals in this case. Opinions?

Timing is to 1/1000 of a second and it is accurate to 1/10,000 so .04 is enough for electronic timing. Manual timing error is too close for that resolution.

Sure, but I mean the relative "value" of the performance. Do you think at some point a difference that can be detected only by an atomic clock is meaningless?

Regardless of the time difference if a difference can be detected there is no tie

If there is a detectable difference yes there is no tie. I wonder what you are saying? if two riders give it all they should both get a medal> it could be like Iron man , all finishers get medals. Whoo Hoo! Having been a time keeper I can tell you it is much better to use atomic clocks than manual timing. to be sure there are less errors this way. I am sure that with stop watches that any two riders finishing within 1 full second might have been cheated by stopwatches and human error.

There have been ties before in cycling. I remember a few years back Taylor Phinney tying with another under-23 for a medal. But I think the tie was for a sprint or something. Not sure you can tie in a TT.
