Category inflation.   As in hills being upgraded to mountains.  Today's Tour Down Under has the 'Corkscrew".  2.4k and 9%  Category 1.  708' = 216m elevation gain.  Cat 1?

Some of the climbs up to Portland's Skyline Blvd must be Beyond Category.  One is 1100' gain and steep.  (Logie Trail)

Maybe there is an alternate Aussie calculation incorporating ambient temperature into Category determination?

The categorization of a climb also depends where it is in a stage. As corkscrew was the final climb in a long stage it got the bump from category 2 to 1. Race organizers to this, in part, to create the incentive for riders to attack to obtain mountain points.

Oh, I know why they do it. But 700 feet should NEVER be a rated Cat 1 unless it is at least, oh, 18%. (Well, maybe you could argue the last 200 feet vertical of Mt Washington rates Cat 1, but you have climbed 4500 feet to get to it and it is 23%.)

Sounds like it was rated purely for the mountain points.

that's the excuse Gesink gave for getting dropped; running out of heartbeats this early in season.

I'm a day behind since I record and watch later at night, but did I hear correctly average speed for yesterday day was around 24mph Max 65 mph and climb on the cork screw @13% was close to to 16 mph!
That is awfully fast for this time of the year no? @#$%^

Maybe CAT1 at TDU is a reference to the crowd sizes which were pretty amazing.

Good racing from beginning to end.

Evans and Porte showed their on track for Giro prep. And Gerrans will be on shortlist for MSR.
